Overview

Liberation Music Orchestra

Some recordings can remain both timepieces and timeless at the same time. LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, filled with references to the Vietnam War, national civil unrest, and Che Guevara, and with evocations of the Spanish Civil War, is a pure product of the late '60s. What elevates it above period-piece status is the obvious emotional fervor that Haden and his band brought to the project and the bristling musical intelligence behind the political rhetoric. Haden has an important collaborator in Carla Bley, whose expansive arrangements somehow unite the worlds of Kurt Weill and Ornette Coleman. Impassioned solos by trumpeter Don Cherry, trombonist Roswell Rudd, and saxophonists Dewy Redman and Gato Barbieri spark inspired pieces like Haden's "Song for Che" and Coleman's "War Orphans." Haden's rangy, fervent bass playing and the zealous commitment of his new wave big band all contribute to the righteous power of this extraordinary musical document.
