Overview

The Lies We Told by Diane Chamberlain

Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that's where the sisters' similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents' murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman's victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker.

After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appear to be no survivors.

Forced to accept Maya is gone, Rebecca and Adam turn to one another—first for comfort, then in passion—unaware that, miles from civilization, Maya is injured and trapped with strangers she's not certain she can trust. Away from the sister who has always been there to save her, now Maya must find the courage to save herself—unaware that the life she knew has changed forever.

Maya and Rebecca might share blood and while they are both doctors, they couldn't be more different. Teen years are rough on everyone but Maya and Rebecca had it even rougher. Can you imagine being a teen and seeing your parents be murdered? Luckily, both of them made it out with their lives. This tragic experience has left them both with broken hearts. Maya is careful about everything she does while Rebecca is a free spirit. A hurricane hits North Carolina and the two sisters, along with Maya's husband Adam, take a trip to help out with the relief effort. The helicopter that Maya was riding in goes down, Rebecca and Adam believe that Maya is dead and their relationship becomes something more. Little did they know that Maya is alive and stranded. What will happen when she returns home? Loved it, loved it, loved it! Seriously, I loved everything about this book: writing style, plot, characters, everything. If you like to read, read this book.

When sisters Maya and Rebecca Ward watched their parents being murdered, they reacted totally opposite to the horror in spite of the fact each became a doctor. Pediatric orthopedist Maya is a withdrawn introvert who married Adam not out of love though she cares about him, but out of finding a safe haven. Rebecca has not married and remains an extrovert who works on global disaster relief scenarios. Following a hurricane, Rebecca goes out to help the survivors. Her sister and brother-in-law come with her. However, as Maya flies out of the ravaged area with a patient, her helicopter apparently crashes. The assumption is she is dead, but she remains alive in an isolated area. Adam and Rebecca grieve their loss in ways neither of them or Maya would have fantasized before the helicopter vanished. The Lies We Told is an interesting contemporary tale in which the grievers turn to one another for solace unaware they betray the person they mourn for. The Rebecca-Adam subplot is emotional while the Maya arc is a thriller. Although the latter gets into more perils than Pauline with escapes that rival the implausibility of the movie heroine, fans will enjoy the distant triangle wondering who will do right in the end. I have been a huge fan of Diane Chamberlain's for quite a while now. Her writing has been compared to Jodi Picoult, but I will go a step further and say that her writing, while similar in genre, is better than Picoult's. Why, you ask? Well because I don't have the violent urge to throw the book at the wall when I come to the end. Once again, Ms. Chamberlain has written a touching story with characters that find their way into your heart. Her new book tells the story of two sisters. Both Doctor's, but that is where the similarities end. Becca is a Doctor with a non-profit organization that deals with disasters and Maya chose the safer route of an office to practice medicine. But when disaster strikes close to home, Maya is pressured into joining in the disaster relief. The helicopter she is in crashes, leaving Maya's husband and sister to believe she is dead. When really she is stranded on an island with a couple that may not have the most honest of intentions. Just like her other books, Ms. Chamberlain tells her storys from more than one viewpoint. In The Lies We Told, you get to see the story unfold from both Maya's & Becca's views. From fear to anxiety to extreme guilt, you are able to get inside their heads and you can truly experience their emotions. I am doing my best to spread the word, I believe that Diane Chamberlain is a hidden gem of an author that has yet to be discovered by the general population. If you have not read any of her works, be sure to pick one up today, I promise that you will not be disappointed.

Big secrets from the past which comes to haunt the lives of two sisters. Both sisters have totally different personalities, and accomplished physicians. As teens they witnessed their parents' murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman's victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker. Exciting to learn the killer and how everything fell into place as the personalities grew. As usual Diane does not disappoint!

The overall plot and subplots were intriguing, but the book became too wordy, overly detailed and eventually boring in several places.
