Author Biography: Grimmelshausen's life was dominated by the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) in which he fought for both sides until its end. He describes himself as a "snotty-nosed ten-year-old musketeer" and his war experiences are mirrored in his masterpiece, Simplicissimus, which his later work draws upon for themes and characters. He wrote the first German bestsellerin 1668!
