Madison Knight is in this book but more of a suspense thriller. The characters are strong believable. A lawyer who wants to win a big case takes a Russian mobster as a client. But when he looses the case his life is now on the line. Wonderful story couldn't put the book down. joy943

Carolyn Arnold doesn't disappoint with the Madison Knight series. I got the first book, Ties That Bind" for free and have happily purchased the rest of the series. Life Sentence was a good background for the series. I actually went back and reread "Just Cause". I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next book in November 2015.

I was one of the lucky ones to receive an ARC of this book. I absolutely fell in love with Madison in Ties that Bind and was looking forward to learning about what Madison's life was about prior to Ties that Bind however Madison was barely in the book even though is was supposed to be a "prequel". I would not in any way call this a prequel as it really is a stand alone book. Even when you hoped that Jessica would have a quick affair and put a twist into the story it feel felt. It was not the page turner I was expecting, but I did read through it as I kept hoping it would pick up. If I understand correctly this book is not a "new" book but one that Ms Arnold wrote when she was first getting started. This is why I continued to read thinking as the story went on something would change. I look forward to reading some of Ms Arnold's newer books as she has shown immense improvement in writing suspense stories. Sadly this one just didn't work for me

Life Sentence by Carolyn Arnold is a romance suspense thriller, which Arnold is known for. I have read almost all of her books, and this continues the trend of writing exciting stories that keep your attention throughout. Life Sentence has an appearance by Madison Knight, our heroine from Arnold’s Madison Knight series. The appearance was long before we get to know Madison, and this is totally separate from that series. Life Sentence is a stand alone read. The story starts with Bryan Lexan, a wealthy and well known lawyer, who takes the murder case of a mob boss. Once Bryan accepts, the mob boss, Dimitri, tells him if he loses this case, he will pay with his life. Bryan knows Dimitri means business, but he is confident he will win this case, and it’s good for his practice. Early on we meet Jessica Pratt, who is in love with Bryan, and patiently awaits him to ask her to marry him. What follows is a suspenseful storyline, that has unexpected twists. When Bryan loses the case, he worries about Jessica, and at that time he does ask her to marry him, and for her to live with him in his house. When her house is ransacked, Jessica does move in with Bryan and accepts his proposal. Jessica, is also in the middle of winning a contract for the company she works for, and meets Mason, one of the owners. She is immediately attracted to him, but keeps her distance, as she is betrothed to Bryan. When Bryan’s co-partner leaves the company quickly, Jessica worries about Bryan and danger he is facing. Then one day he never comes home. What follows is an exciting last third of the book, with Jessica’s life falling apart, and Mason trying to help her recover. There were so many surprises and twists, which changed the game often. Was Bryan killed by the mob? Will Jessica allow herself to become involved with Mason? Is Jessica’s life in danger? You will have to read this book to find the answers. If I had to be picky, there is one thing I found a little unbelievable. Bryan was wealthy, running an excellent law firm. What person in there right mind would accept a case from the mob, with a threat of win or lose your life. Aside from that, the storyline was great. Life Sentence is a thriller all the way, which I read non-stop. Carolyn Arnold is known for writing wonderful suspense thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat, with lots of excitement, as well as many twists along the way that continually surprise you. Having read all of Arnold’s books, she never disappoints us. I wholly recommend Life Sentence for those who want an exciting thriller to read.

Defense Attorney Bryan Lexan has decided to defend a Russian mafia boss. The man, charged with first degree murder, threatens Bryan that if he loses the case, he will be killed. Bryan ignores the threat. He knows he can't lose. He will win the case and become a famous attorney. During the trial he tries to keep his relationship with his girlfriend, Jessica Pratt, from falling apart. The trial takes more of his time than he expects. His life begins to unravel when Bryan loses his "can't lose" case and he knows the mafia boss will keep his word. Meanwhile, Jessica has met a client, Mason Freeman, at her job. Mason is taken with Jessica immediately, but Jessica is in love with Bryan or is she? Carolyn Arnold will take you on a wonderful, wild ride while Bryan is trying to do what he can to save his life and Jessica is torn between the man she loves and the man beginning to steal her heart. "Life Sentence" is a great read. It is fast moving and addictive. Its twists and turns will keep you reading. I had a hard time putting it down. Don't miss this one. Although Madison Knight has a minimal role in this book, it does introduce her and she adds to the plot line.

Arnold delivers yet again! Life Sentence is a thrilling ride through the chaotic life of defense attorney Bryan Lexan as he tackles one of the biggest cases of his career. When things go awry, he is up against a Russian gangster with a vengeance. Combined with his shaky relationship with the beautiful Jessica Pratt, Bryan's life is thrown into turmoil. This story has it all:  steamy romance, intricate legal battles, violent mafia men, suspenseful detective work, and a cast of characters that will have you guessing who's innocent and who's got a hidden agenda. Once the ball got rolling, I could not put it down. I was biting my nails all the way up till the dramatic and showstopping finale. A true winner from a thriller writer that knows how to pack a punch! I can't wait to see what Arnold dishes out next!
