Max lives with his father, Rasheed, and doesn't remember his mother, who was murdered by burglars before father and son were forced from Beirut to New Jersey. Rasheed is enamored of his idea of American culture—baseball and barbecues—and has tried to shed his Lebanese heritage completely: "When we are in America," Reed (for he goes by Reed in America, not Rasheed) tells Max, "we are Americans."

Rasheed has a single purpose in life: to provide Max with a joyful childhood. But sometimes his efforts do more harm than good, and when Max is seventeen, he discovers that his father has been lying to him—about everything—and their peaceful universe is destroyed. Max ventures on an uncertain mission to Beirut to find what he hadn't known was lost.

Lifted by the Great Nothing is a graceful book about the lengths we go to preserve the untruths we live by. With poignant relationships, unsettling misadventures, and surprising love stories, the novel is a touching and devastating portrait of a young man coming to terms with his country's—and his own—violent past.

A wonderful journey of young love, devotion and abandonment.   Lifted by the Great Nothing is a wonderful journey touching on domestic race and immigrant relations and international politics, individual abandonment and collective caring, selfishness and generosity, truth that hurts and secrets that protect, violently truncated family and unusual friendships, love and sex, a maturing adolescent dealing with separation, old age, dementia and death...

Lifted by the Great Nothing is a captivating story that draws you in with suspense, humor and humanity. The narrative is up close and personal with interesting but ultimately flawed characters which kept me emotionally engaged. A wide-ranging journey of an adolescent immigrant careening towards adulthood and the truth that is carefully hidden from him. An excellent debut novel from an engaging, mature, and emotionally attuned young author. A great read. I am looking forward to his next novel.

I really wanted to like this book, and I did! It touches on so many complex themes with just the right mix of humour and gravity. The story moves across contexts and cultures in unexpected ways without losing sight of universal themes of trust and love.  Well worth the read.
