One's self expression is their way to tell the world look who I am and what I'm all about. One's inabilty to understand that powerful need and let them walk down the path of their choice is hard. Holding someone with special needs back is more harm. Letting them face the world with your hand be their side is the road to take.

This beautifully crafted novel explores the intersecting lives of four related women but centers in particular on Lena, who is retarded. How refreshing to see such a character treated with absolutely no condescension. It is precisely because Lena's handicap is not used to manipulate the reader that she is genuinely poignant. This book explores a multitude of themes, including adolescence, old age, the need for safety in repeated rituals, and especially what it means to be 'normal'. Don't miss the debut novel of this exceptionally gifted writer!
