Manuscript 593 was first brought to Rennes in the 18th century, was confiscated by revolutionaries and later came to light in the municipal library there. Dating to the early 14th century, the manuscript contains four encyclopedias on the nature and workings of the world as it was conceived in the medieval period. Comprising moral treatises, religious poems, philosophy and astronomy, the text and many illuminations present an alternative approach to understanding the world. This book presents the manuscript for the first time along with discussions of its rediscovery, its historical and artistic context and its demarcation as a work of 'vulgarisation'. French text.
