"You can't change the past... no matter how much you want to."

If only Allie Collins could go back to that tragic day one year ago, perhaps she could escape the guilt that haunts her. In reality, there was no altering her cousin's death or the role she played.

Then she meets Damien Michaels, a dark-haired stranger on a dirt bike, who seems to watch Allie and know more about her than he should. Veiling his own secrets, including a mysterious scar and tattoo, Allie knows she shouldn't trust him - especially as she digs up a past Damien desperately wants to forget. She also doesn't believe in summer romances, yet she finds her attraction to him growing beyond his striking grey eyes. Too late, Allie discovers he is hiding a dark past that is far from over, endangering her life and those she loves.

Lingering Echoes is a Young Adult novel that is truly a testament to the choices we make and the willingness to accept and forgive situations that are completely out of our control. Anyone who as teen or young adult made choices that may have resulted in a less then awesome outcome, should really read this book. There are so many messages throughout this book, new relationships and building on broken relationships, forgiveness, acceptance and understanding. Allie and Damien both have to deal with the guilt of their choices that lead to tragedy. But in the end there is no way to see the future and as a teen, young adult or even adult this is a valuable lesson. We make choices every day and in the end we cannot see the outcome of these choices until sometimes it too late and out of our control. Lingering Echoes is such a beautiful story. It’s detailed and has a great buildup of anticipation, wanting to know what happened with both Allie and Damien and what will happen next. I do really wish there was more to the ending. But to avoid spoilers I will not go further into that. I loved this book and truly appreciated the messages throughout the story.

Received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I devoured this book in a single afternoon. Wow. What a fun and beautiful story! "Lingering Echoes" is the perfect summer read. It was romantic, without feeling too angsty and held a thrilling/suspenseful mystery at the heart of it. Erica Kiefer truly has a gift for honest storytelling. So often you can be left rolling your eyes if a character lingers too long in the pain, or behaves irrationally. But I really felt like I understood what both Allie and Damien were going through. I loved watching Allie take the journey to finding forgiveness and self-acceptance for the things she could not control, as well as finding the courage to open her heart to new people and experiences. Highly recommend!

How does a teenaged girl recover from the undeserved guilt of not being able to save a loved one? Allie was there the day her young cousin died in a freak drowning accident and life has never been the same for her. While staying with her father and his new family at a summer cottage getaway, Allie is forced to face her fears without success. Already filled with grief and guilt, the bullying from her step-brother only makes things worse. Enter Damien, a dark and mysterious young man who at first scares Allie, but when curiosity gets the best of her, she discovers and amazingly caring and giving person who is struggling with his own demons. Can Allie help Damien as much as he has helped her? Will her family and friends finally see the real Damien and not the boy who lives under the cloud of rumor and accusations? Two lonely souls, two young people who truly understand what the other feels, this is one of the most touching tales I have read. Lingering Echoes by Erica Kiefer will not only pull at your heartstrings, but practically rip them out of your chest as Allie’s story unfolds. Damien’s hidden truth come out later, and is timed perfectly by this talented author. I was “into” this tale heart, mind and soul from start to finish! So much pain, so much lack of understanding, perhaps it takes one who knows the burden you carry to truly help bring you out of the darkness and into the light of living again. Erica Kiefer has written one of the finest stories of love and redemption I have ever read, never missing a beat with her characters and their effect on the story. The emotions she allows her characters to reveal are so human, so natural and completely understandable, if misguided; one cannot help but hope for their futures to be filled with joy. If an author can achieve that kind of reader involvement, they have done their job, and done it well.

This is a highly emotional, sad, and tragic story, but it is also a story that shows great growth by the characters. It is filled with twists and turns and it will keep you entertained all the way through.

On first glance it appears that Lingering Echoes is the quintessential good girl meets bad boy romance story, but in actual fact the story goes far deeper than that, revealing hidden truths and healing family misunderstandings. This is not a long novel and I was able to finish it in one sitting, revelling in Erica Kiefer's rich storytelling and intimate characterizations. Allie has returned to Hidden Pines a year after a family tragedy which she feels responsible for, only to befriend the young man who is the source of much town gossip. Their friendship is based on trust and while Damien helps Allie to overcome her fears, she enables him to open up about his own secrets, without fear of prejudice. Despite their personal tragedies these are two gutsy characters, who are willing to make sacrifices to develop their romance. The reader begins the story with preconceptions about Damien as his family history is established, but the more we know him our opinion changes and we desire the couple's happy ever after. But to reach their ending Damien and Allie have to overcome obstacles and as the plot develops Erica Kiefer's writing becomes more urgent, adding to the tension and expectancy. I was surprised by how involved I became in this story and think that Lingering Echoes will be enjoyed by fans of contemporary romance with an extra dose of mystery. I received this as a complimentary review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.

I really enjoyed Lingering Echoes for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it is a great story. It has unexpected twists and turns, as well as a positive message. There's friendship, romance, adventure, and intrigue- all the makings of a great novel. I also like that is it well polished, not a lot of typos or grammatical errors, something that I find is rare these days.

My Review of: Lingering Echoes by Erica Kiefer “Lingering Echoes” was a nice surprise. I quite enjoyed the book and Ms. Kiefer’s writing. The story touches on some tough emotional subjects and how they affect two teens, Allie and the mysterious Damien. Somehow Kiefer managed to do this without losing the readers in a dark maze of emotional quicksand. I thought the story was somewhat original. There were areas that I was able to pick out what would happen next, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment. There is a lot of subtle blending of mysterious encounters and comments throughout that kept me reading. I had to find out just what that person meant when they said that…or why was that person standing there watching from the bushes. The romance built slowly, which on one hand was nice. I like a book that doesn’t suffer from insta-love. Yes, Allie was intrigued by Damien from the beginning. Teens are like that. Something or someone will spark an interest and stay in the forefront of their mind. And for teen girls, that’s usually awesomely hawt boys on motorcycles. But Allie didn’t profess her undying love and devotion for Damien on page one, or even in chapter one of the book. (I actually thought the romance could have moved a little faster.) So that was refreshing. In fact, I loved the development of their relationship. It was sweet and just, sigh. The characters in the book were nicely done. They weren’t all nice. They had conflict of their own, but there was also conflict between the characters. That made them believable. Allie was a likeable character. Damien was to an extent. It was hard to connect with him because he was somewhat closed off—but that WAS his character, and it worked well. The secondary characters were great. I think the author did a really wonderful job of trying to develop them and bring them into the story to give them meaningful roles. The writing style was a little hard for me to get used to. I’m not sure why and it is a subjective area. So I don’t base my review on that because other readers may like it fine. I thought some of the wording was odd, such as using the word “handbag” for a teen. It didn’t gel for me. I don’t even call it a handbag. However, to be fair, I never read an author’s biography before I read their book. In fact, I haven’t read Ms. Kiefer’s bio. So, it may be a regional term. All in all, it doesn’t matter, the strength of story doesn’t hinge on that. BOTTTOM LINE: I enjoyed “Lingering Echoes” a lot. I thought it had some pacing issues, especially in the middle, but they were easily overlooked. The story was passionate, emotional and poignant. I recommend it. I wouldn’t hesitate to read Ms. Kiefer’s work again, and I’m looking forward to the second installment in the series!

Allie is spending the summer at Hidden Pines with her dad, his new wife Clara, and her stepbrother Nick, along with her new friend Brooke and Nick's college buddy Aaron. Her family hopes to help Allie overcome her feelings of guilt over an incident that happened the previous summer. But how far will they go? Who can Allie trust? And why is she so afraid of the water? When Allie is rescued from a fall by the mysterious Damien, she discovers that they have more in common that she originally thought. Damien tries to help Allie overcome her fears, but he is also haunted by his past. Can people change? Will Damien ever be able to escape his past, or will his past come back to haunt him? The story moves along at a steady pace and has a nice mix of mystery, romance, and suspense. I especially like the chapter that tells Damien's story about his past. While there are some minor editing errors, including word misuse, there are also some lovely descriptive passages. I look forward to reading more by this talented new writer. I received this book in return for an honest review.

Lingering Echoes sucked me in from the beginning with its mystery. That's funny because I wouldn't normally say I love to read mysteries, but this book left me wanting to proudly proclaim my love for the genre! It has an almost paranormal feel, too. To add to the mystery of the plot, you have the very mysterious Damien. His mysteriousness is one of the very things that makes his character so great, but you don't know until the end whether he's the good guy or the bad. As a matter of fact, I absolutely DREADED getting to the end. I just knew he was going to be the bad guy, but I sooo wanted him to be the good guy. Then there's Aaron. Aaron is completely crushing on Allie alongside Damien. The deal here is that you know Aaron's a good guy. You know he'd be perfect and a healthy choice for Allie. It's kind of like in the Infernal Devices series when you know you want to see both Will & Jem happy, but it's really Will, the darker character, that should be with Tessa. Then there's Allie. She's dealing with some major stuff all on her own. Between feeling guilty over the loss of a loved one and dealing with the new step-brother, Nick, she has her hands full. I have to say though, that she has an absolutely amazing bff to help see her through. I thought Brooke was nothing but ditzy in the beginning, but she really comes through for Allie. Now back to the mysterious plot. It all comes to one massive climax at the end. I was absolutely terrified!! I felt complete and utter heartbreak! But, don't think that I'm giving the ending away, because I'm definitely not!! That's just the climax!! As far as the ending goes, there's no cliffhanger for all you cliffhanger haters. However, the story doesn't feel complete. It leaves you wanting to know what's next. I sure hope we get more!! * I received a copy via NetGalley and Clean Teen Publishing/AuthorBuzz in exchange for an honest review.*

Lingering Echoes is kind of a tough book. It is beautiful but in a sad and broken way for a lot of the story. It is tragic and emotional, but Erica Kiefer deals with some really hard deaths. I liked the summer time, lake/ cabin setting. I think the setting was perfect because it allowed all the characters to basically be together 24/7, so they forged quicker bonds. There was mystery, mixed in with some pretty great character growth. This whole story was about growth. Allie seems like such a broken girl at the start of the story. At first she comes off cold and and kind of rude, but then I reminded myself that even coming back to this place was super hard for her. Even when she was being kind of cold, I always was on her side rooting for her. There is just something about her that you can't help but like. And then when she started to open up, and when she was with Damian, I really started to like her. She is just a teenage girl that is dealing with a huge amount of grief and guilt. And then there is the whole Damian aspect of the story. He seemed to be really good for Allie. He made her feel safe and he pushed her to go outside her comfort zone with the water. It was just really nice to watch Allie blossom with him. And Damian seemed to grow and open up when he was around Allie too. They were good for each other. There were lots of twists and turns in Lingering Echoes, some were predictable and some that I didn't see coming. It was a nice mixture. The story has great pacing. It wasn't too fast or too slow, but towards the end it did pick up quite a bit during some of the more frantic events. People that like emotional reads, will really enjoy this beautiful story dealing with death and dealing with grief, and how to move on when you don't think that you can. I loved watching Allie start to become ok again. It was a great character journey to witness. *disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. *Provided with a copy from NetGalley, for an honest review* Erica Kiefer, wrote Lingering Echoes beautifully. I say that because this book had everything that I was looking for in an NA book. You have mystery, romance (the hot guy of course), comedy. After a while you forget that you are reading a book, because it’s like you are actually in Allie’s head, looking through her eyes. She hurts you hurt, she laughs, you laugh etc. Allie, is going off to college at the end of the summer, but before she leaves she spends a couple of months at her dad’s cabin at Hidden Pines with her “new family”. A year before, something life changing for Allie happens at Hidden Pines that she is reluctant to talk about. She keeps to herself mostly, doesn’t really let people in. Until she meets the mysterious Damien. Damien is the hot older guy (okay, not that much older). He drives a motorcycle and just happens to be there when Allie is in trouble. The whole time, I kept asking myself who is he? What’s his story? Just like Allie, Damien went through a horrific incident that is now haunting him. Even though Allie doesn’t trust people, Damien is always a step ahead of her, always there when she is falling. He wants to help to heal Allie, but during the process, Allie helps to heal Damien. This book will have you on the edge of your seat, craving for more. You NEED to know what happens. The last 40% of the book will keep you on your toes! I swear, I was sitting down but I couldn’t sit down. I paced back and forth reading. Erica Kiefer, is one author that you need to keep an eye out for. Bravo on an awesome book!

Absolutely awesome. I LOVED this book. Meet the main character, Allie: Allie is mourning the death of her cousin Maddie, who drowned right in front of her. Even though it wasn't her fault and she nearly died herself trying to rescue her, Allie blames herself for Maddie's death. Meet Damian: Damian is the mysterious stranger harboring his own brutal secret who manages to keep popping up in Allie's life at just the right time.

Wow, what a ride. Lingering Echoes is a book filled with action, drama, and suspense. I really enjoyed Allie's character and was happy to be able to follow her journey to recovery. I was first introduced to Erica Kiefer's work when I read Rumors, the prequel novella to Lingering Echoes and I couldn't wait to read more by her. You don't have to read Rumors before reading Lingering Echoes (they both give you the details of what happened to Allie's cousin) but I'm really glad I did. It was nice to have the background info about everything Allie had been going through for the past year before returning to the cabin/lake. This book does have some romance in it, but it's still a clean/safe read for all YA readers.

Lingering Echoes is written by Erica Kiefer and published by Clean Teen Publishing. It is an older young adult/new adult story with elements of romance, mystery, and suspense. I read Rumors, the FREE prequel novella to Lingering Echoes, and I believe that reading it prior to reading this story helped me to understand and sympathize with the main character and also gave me a little more insight into the family dynamics that take place in the story. Allie is a broken and guilt ridden 17 year old that is unable to move forward. She feels responsible for the drowning death of her 9-year-old cousin and her father is concerned that she isn't mentally well enough to head off to college. He hopes that a summer vacation at the same cabin where the tragedy took place will give her some closure, help her heal, and at the same time connect with him and get to know her "new" family. Allie is a character that I didn't really fall in love with but that I did want to see succeed. She is in pain and wracked with guilt. She isn't one of those bubbly characters that you just want to hang out with. She is the character you want to help but that is hard to reach. Damien is the bad boy. But is he really? I flip flopped back in forth on this one several times. The author does a great job of creating suspense in discovering who Damien is and what his past holds. More tragedy and suspense follow as Allie learns the mysteries of Damien's past and it is in these moments that Allie finally realizes that life is fleeting and begins the process of healing and living in the present. Memorable Quote ------------ "Now let me ask you something," Damien said. I waited expectantly and he continued. " Do you believe everything happens for a reason?" I turned my head upwards in thought, taking in the calm, clear sky above us. "I don't know about all things," I said, "but certainly some." "Even hard situations?" Damien questioned. "Maybe especially the hard situations. I think it helps make us stronger, and helps us connect to the right people. I didn't always believe that, but I do now." ------------------- This is a story of character growth, healing, and new beginnings. Be sure to pick up the FREE prequel novella, Rumors and then read Lingering Echoes. It isn't a must read prior to reading Lingering Echoes but I believe it adds a lot to the story. My Book Source: Publisher I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I read a lot of YA novels and it was so refreshing to read Lingering Echoes. As the relationship builds between Allie and Damien, the author focused more on the drama between these two as it intensified and the tensions that pulled these two together instead of building a steamy novel centered on their romance. Allie and Damien do have some tender moments in this book but the book was not solely focused on their romance. There were friendship issues, family issues, lots of drama, and many layers of this novel. Allie has her wall up for an incident that happened in the past and Damien has some ghosts in his closet that Allie soon uncovers. Perhaps these two are really not that different from one another. It all begins when Allie reluctantly shows up at Hidden Pines to start a two week vacation with her father. Tension are already in the air. It’s the location of the destination that has Allie on edge and her step-brother isn’t making things any easier. As Damien enters the picture, Allie doesn’t know what to make of him but with his striking gray eyes and his dark hair. He’s a distraction from being with her family and what a distraction he ends up being. I loved the way that the author twisted Damien into the story, signs of a true master of storytelling. Thank you NetGalley for letting me a read of copy of this book.

This was such a fun and exciting read! It's been a while since I haven't been able to put down a book, but I stayed up way past my bedtime to find out what was going to happen next with Lingering Echoes :) I loved the characters and felt like I really got to know them, even feeling their pain and happiness. I highly recommend this awesome book!

Seventeen year old Allie is resentful that she has been forced to spend her holidays with her father, and his new family. Even worse, she is expected to go on the family boat, when she is clearly terrified. Her reluctance and disapproval of the whole situation threatens to spoil the holiday for all. Allie’s new friend, Brooke, is a flirt, and her behaviour causes problems. Allie meets a tall, dark, stranger under strange circumstances. Once discovered, the others are worried that his intentions may not be honourable. Lingering echoes is an apt title – as many of the characters have past events in their lives that are greatly affecting the present. Events unfold in a way that affects everyone, and relationships change. An interesting story, well written.

I picked this book up at NetGalley even though I have a very long to read list. I was drawn in by the synopsis and when I saw that it was published by Clean Reads Publishing that cinched it for me. I was very impressed by how well the author kept it clean even while exploring some very intense themes. I couldn't put it down as I watched Allie work through a tremendous amount of pain and grief. I loved the characters. Her friends were wonderful. They were all very individual and at times I really couldn't guess which way the story would go. I was struck by the healing and hope that was discovered on Allie's journey. While, I might not have made the same choices she did, it was fun to see her choices rewarded for following her instincts. I would love to read more from this author!!!!!

Erica Kiefer's writing style is right down my alley. I am a total sucker for a good dramatic romance and she did not disappoint. She grabs your attention from the beginning and leaves you hanging until the very end. I pride myself in being able to predict endings to books, but not this one, I was off the mark, which impressed me! I love the element of surprise. I appreciate the clean writing style and would feel safe letting my kids read this, which in and of itself is worth 5 stars.
