Description: Using the nursing process, with suggestions for specific interventions and rationales, this book presents 52 nursing care plans for the most commonly encountered behaviors in psychiatric mental health nursing. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose: The psychiatric clinical experience always produces anxiety in nursing students; a book like this that provides nursing interventions with rationales will assist in decreasing this anxiety.
Audience: The authors intend this book for nursing students in psychiatric nursing classes, but it is also relevant for practicing psychiatric nurses to use as a reference in writing care plans for their patients.
Features: The book is divided into three parts. The first two provide basic information about the use of the book and key considerations in mental health nursing. The last part presents the actual care plans. New to this edition is information on complementary and alternative medicine, revised and updated care plans, and what is noted by the authors as updated recommended readings and references. The real problem is that these readings and references are not listed at the end of each care plan, but at the end of each general section. This is not conducive to encouraging students to do additional exploration of a topic.
Assessment: As inpatient care of psychiatric patients becomes more and more difficult, it is important to have a reference to help with completing care plans. The importance of individualizing each plan of care is discussed by the authors, but there is a deficit of additional readings or references in this book that psychiatric nurses or students can use for continued learning.
