Lise de la Salle Plays Liszt

Released to mark Franz Liszt's bicentennial year, this album by French pianist Lise de la Salle features his original keyboard works and transcriptions of music by Mozart, Schumann, Schubert, and Wagner, giving a well-rounded sampling of his output for solo piano. Many of Liszt's compositions overflow with dazzling passages of technical virtuosity, and the rapid runs, hammered octaves, widely spaced chords, and shimmering arpeggios associated with showy piano music are in ample evidence in most of the selections. But to think that Liszt's music is mostly about showing off overlooks the many instances of poignant lyricism and rapt meditation, which are essential parts of Liszt's expression. De la Salle is a skilled interpreter, and her playing is clean and incisive, displaying both technical brilliance and meticulous attention to detail, demonstrating just how difficult this music is to execute with accuracy and bravado at the same time. She is powerful in "Après une lecture du Dante," the "Ballade No. 2 in B minor," "Mazeppa," and the thunderous "Funérailles," but she displays remarkable physical control and emotional restraint in the adaptations of Mozart's "Lacrymosa," Schubert's "Ständchen," and the enigmatic late Liszt piece, "Nuages gris." For making the acquaintance of the Romantic composer par excellence, this album is a good place to start, and de la Salle is an excellent guide to his passionate music. Naïve's sound is good, but the piano seems a little distant and unfocused in soft sections.
