Little Elliot is an amazingly cute little elephant. Who doesn’t love him? Come on? Who didn’t see Elliot on the cover and go “Awwwww”? ;) Mr. Curato has written a great story about friendship. I like how Elliot meets someone smaller than him and together they tackle the big city! The illustrations are magnificent. I like how it seems to take place in the 1940’s. The cars are well-drawn (and pretty cool). The clothing on the people match the time period too. I love the feel you get from just the pictures (like looking at an old picture). This story is awesome also! I think that it would make a marvelous read-a-loud and a book to teach that with a little help, we can meet our challenges! :) *NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Beautiful illustrations. I'd read it over and over and I don't even have a kid.

A delightful and magnificently illustrated children's book about a little elephant who finds encouragement from an unexpected new friend.  Little Elliot is a tiny elephant trying to get by in the Big City. But because of his small size, he is easily lost in the crowd and ignored. It is difficult for him to accomplish daily chores and errands. And most importantly, he can never get the attention nor help he needs to buy a much wanted cupcake.  Until one day, he meets someone who is even smaller than he is -  a little white mouse - who seems to be struggling with the same things that Little Elliot is.  Together they become friends, a team, and they help each other accomplish the things that they have always wanted to do. And in the end, they are finally rewarded with a cupcake.  When it comes to picture books, the actual illustrations have to tell me the story - but they not only need to tell me the story, they also need to make me feel what the characters are feeling and thinking before I read the words that are accompanying that page's storytelling. Mike Curato not only gives us the sweetest little elephant and mouse I have ever seen, but also delivers exactly how a little person would portray and feel being in a large city - making us feel even smaller, lonely and sad. But also, through Little Elliot and his mouse friend, gives us encouragement and hope that one day we can accomplish the big things that we want to do.  Little Elliot may be a tiny elephant, but he has the biggest heart I have ever seen, and felt. I highly recommend adding this to your child's shelf and reading it over and over again... one to be handed down to generations to come! *I received an ARC from the publisher for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Most young readers (and many adults) can relate to the feeling of being small in huge place. Little Elliot faces some big challenges living in a big city, and he’s certainly learned creative ways to get by, but when he tries to buy a cupcake, poor Elliot goes unnoticed. Aw! But never fear, after a little walk Elliot discovers someone who helps him put things in perspective, and he starts to feel not so small after all. This is a super sweet book with darling illustrations to match. The retro color palette and style suit the story and Elliot’s voice “just right.” I always admire illustrated end papers and under-the-book-jacket surprises, and this book did not disappoint. To me, this book is the whole package: art, text, voice, and theme. Mike Curato’s dedication says,“For anyone who feels unnoticed.” Well, I noticed Elliot and Mike Curato’s wonderful talent, and I hope others will too!
