Little Known Tales in California History based on 0 ratings. 2 reviews.
A fun and informative book. Grew up at the base of Baldwin Hills and was intrigued to find out it was named for Elias Jackson 'Lucky' Baldwin. Quite the shrewd scallywag! Seems like an awful lot of California places were named after rather shady characters. Stanford University, Huntington Beach, Crocker Bank to name a few. Best thing I learned was that the TV series Kung Fu was spot on with how the Chinese were treated in California during the Gold Rush!
I have had the original version of this book for quite some time and have enjoyed it immensely. HAD to get the revised version as soon as I saw it was available. Though not an in-depth book for "serious" history lovers, it IS a great way to get people interested in history. The short-chapter format makes it great for kids. Although my family has been in California for quite a number of generations and have had an active part in the state's history (and I have always been an avid reader of same) this book managed to surprise me with some tidbits I was not already aware of. A lot of fun! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in California history or for anyone planning a trip and looking for some little-visited destiations.
