Overview

Live at Stubb's

Matthew Miller grew up like plenty other suburban kids, listening to rap and reggae, following Phish, and smoking weed. But when he embraced the Lubavitch branch of Chasidic Judaism, Miller embarked on a path more unique, and today he's the singular beat-boxing, dancehall-toasting Matisyahu. Standing over six feet tall in his black fedora, Matisyahu cuts a stunning figure as he begins to bust spiritual rhymes atop the one-drop rhythms of a live band. You can almost hear the crowd at the Austin, Texas, club collectively inhale as he launches into "Sea to Sea," one of the three songs that don't appear on his debut, Shake Off the Dust…Arise. Novelty propels Matisyahu only so far, though, and then it's up to the skills and message of the 25-year-old MC to carry the evening. On his studio debut, Matisyahu's voice was occasionally thin, but caught live here, in the midst of a coast-to-coast tour, it sounds powerful, whether delivering biblically inspired rhymes or wordless mystic nigunnim. Those unaccustomed to Lubavitch may carry their own prejudices about these bearded, scholarly, and perennially overdressed Jews. But Matisyahu, connecting the earthy Jewish mysticism of chasidus to the ganja-induced dreaminess of Rasta reggae, makes an eloquent champion. Following his spiritual master's mission to bring the divine light into the world, Matisyahu certainly awakens the crowd on this promising set.

i have seen matisyahu on all the various late nite talk shows. i think a lot of his appeal is the juxtaposition of his appearance vs the sound of his music. i loved the songs but i kept wonder if that was the entire appeal. if that is what made him unique. i can really safely say, it's not. this man has a unique voice. there is something truly heartfelt and inspiring about him. you just feel good listening to him. so here he is live on record without any visuals. all i can do is listen and love it. the band is tight and matis is in top form. "king without a crown" is on his official myspace page and you really should go and hear it. it's amazing and pretty much the reason i decided to take the plunge and buy this cd. i cannot wait for the studio record.

I love this CD! The lyrics are awesome and the delivery electrical. The message is soulful, uplifting and contains no salty or suggestive language. It is so rare to find such a unique and contemporary genre of music (not in the Christian Rock category) that you can ACTUALLY listen to in the car with young children. It is a breath of fresh air among our rotation of classical and children’s' CDs. I am waiting for much more to come from this very talented artist! In the meantime, I have ordered "Live at Stubb's" by Matisyahu for all the other Gen-Xers on my Hanukkah list!

When I first heard King Without a Crown, it was on the radio. I didn't hear the title, or the artist, but was so impressed with the lyrics and energy of the song that I didn't stop looking until I found the artist. After reading about MIller's life, it has made me appreciate his music even more. Whether you are religious or not, this music is not only easy to enjoy, but inspirational.
