Live at the Jazz Bakery

Brian Swartz's performance at the Jazz Bakery came about through subbing for another trumpeter in Bob Florence's Limited Edition. Swartz hit it off with the pianist and hired him for several gigs in Los Angeles, one of which was this date, initially taped for radio broadcast but of such high quality that Swartz acquired the rights to it. Joined by bassist Trey Henry and drummer Dick Weller (also members of Florence's big band), the quartet sticks mostly to extended but imaginative workouts of standards. Florence's unusual comping in "The Days of Wine and Roses" inspires the leader's trumpet, while "My Romance" begins as a subdued flügelhorn/bass duet. Swartz's inventive scoring of "Never Let Me Go" as a midtempo bossa nova shows his promise as an arranger, while Florence steals the show during the dreamy duet (with Swartz on flügelhorn) of "Stardust." While the quartet's rendition of "Star Eyes" retains the typical vamp, the oft-kilter, dissonant playing of Swartz and Florence adds a bit of spice to this warhorse. Also not to be missed is their smoldering treatment of "All the Things You Are." Highly recommended.
