Overview

This stunning first novel by the author of The Wedding is one of only a handful of novels published by black women during the 1940s. It tells the story of Cleo Judson—daughter of southern sharecroppers and wife of "Black Banana King" Bart Judson. Cleo seeks to recreate her original family by urging her sisters and their children to live with her, while rearing her daughter to be a member of Boston's black elite.

Phenomenal book. This truly should be consider an American classic. Cleo Jericho is the original Scarlet O'Hara. It is also an extraordinary portrait of African-American life in Boston at the turn of the 20th century, one that is woefully missing from so much literature.

This book is excellent to read. Its kinda about the struggle of living back 1940's. and venturing out to start their own business. It gives one reson to hope, or at least a understanding of another side of black experience.

There are so few books that African Americans can claim as literature. This is definitely literature. Her words create such a vivid mental picture. She truly uses her talent to take you on an emotional roller coaster. One minute you loathe Cleo(the main character) for her conniving and manipulation and the next you feel utter compassion for her. Amazing!
