If you aren’t Living the Dream — here’s how As a writer and book publisher — which includes being an entrepreneur, accountant, billing clerk, promoter, carpenter, and dishwasher — I knew I had the right help available when I opened the Introduction to Corwin Hiebert’s Living the Dream — Putting your creativity to work. Not only does Hiebert explain the need for creativity in areas thought to be mundane, but he offers ways to do it. And he writes like he’s sitting across the table sipping a cuppa. The early chapters help with the “business” end of any entrepreneurial business, from business planning to lining up professionals to keep you legal and unencumbered. (Gee whiz, this guys seemed to be inside my head.) He shows how to arrange an office, schedule time, work with clients, FIND new clients, and manage money (everything from how to bill to how to invest). The later chapters became an even greater help for me. He took my hand and led me into the marketing maze. Writers often have trouble with self-promotion, and Hiebert removes all doubts about how to generate business and let clients know who and where I am, and what I do. In the author’s words, “It’s all about being creative and getting paid.” First, he underlines the importance of the “logo” (calling it a “brandmark” as opposed to the ever-popular “branding”). Who’da thought? In this era, most confusing for anyone who didn’t grow up with fingers glued to computer keys, he thoroughly explores ways to network by using the Internet, social media, and websites, all the ways to create your identity share with the world — yes, the world — while protecting your creative work. Is this book for you? Are you a 9-to-5er with a hobby you’d like to turn into a productive business? Do you consider yourself a left-brain engineer with no creative bones (you’re not, you know)? Are you a struggling entrepreneur with a small business going nowhere? Are you a starving freelancer with a lot of talent and no place to share it? Are you living your dream? Hiebert’s book is changing lives, even though it’s been “out” only a short time. I know; it is changing mine.
