Description: As our society changes and matures, businesses are becoming more and more a kind of extended family. Flexible work schedules and onsite child care reflect this connection between work and life. Therefore, issues such as grief and bereavement also are found in the workplace.
Purpose: The purpose is to help hospices become an integral part of the community on all levels. By reaching out to people in their work, at school, and at places of worship, the concept of hospice becomes more familiar and hopefully more utilized.
Audience: This text is written for hospice care professionals, but the style and terminology are appropriate for care givers and laypersons as well. Those involved in human resources and employee assistance programs will also find this text an invaluable resource. The editors have done an enormous amount of work in the area of grief counseling. They are highly respected and well versed in the task of facilitating the grief process.
Features: Grief is, understandably, a human experience and process that can occur on many levels. Yet, we know that where we grieve is also a crucial factor in the facilitation of the grief process. This text has identified the workplace, school, and worship area as the major areas outside the home where people grieve. To facilitate an understanding of the process people go through in any arena, this text offers resources and viable suggestions.
Assessment: As our society becomes more aware of the impact that grief has on our daily lives, healthcare professionals must be prepared to meet the challenge of facilitating the grief process. This text provides such preparation and is a welcome addition to the growing body of knowledge regarding grief and the grieving process.

"This book, though aimed mainly at those who work in hospices ,is a timely reminder to anyone working with bereaved people that grief is not confined to the home. Each chapter by a different author aims to help hospices become central resources in the community.
Most of the information and examples of the effects of bereavement on workers and students would be well known to anyone trained in bereavement counselling, but the discussion on how schools can be a resource for HIV-affected children, giving models for helpful interventions, could be very useful. The book emphasises the need for plans to be made before a death occurs in the workplace or school and encourages teachers not to underestimate the impact they can have in giving support to a bereaved student. Case studies illustrate the intervention suggested by the authors. These, and the general tone of the writing, can be very moving at times."
