A four-month-old horse is separated from her mother. In the middle of the night, thousands of miles away in Connecticut, Locket the burro hears a tiny voice. "I want my mommy," she hears over and over again. "There's a mommy here who will take care of you," Locket tells her. Weeks later, the foal, Beatrice, arrives at Locket's Meadow, sullen and angry. Although rescued from death in a slaughterhouse, all she can think about is how much she misses her mother and Canada's green meadows. David and Kathleen, the farm owners, try to help her but she grows angrier every day. "She doesn't look like my mommy," Beatrice cries to Locket when the burro tells her Kathleen will be her new mother. "But if you give her a chance . . .," Locket says. "I would give her a chance," says another, deeper voice. "If only I could find my way there, I would give her a chance." Ernie, another foal, is days away from slaughter. Can Locket and her friends rescue a horse two thousand miles away?

In this compelling tale of a farm in CT, the author shares tales of the farm. Very realistic, you feel as though you are living the book and know the animals personally. Also a good way for kids to learn about rescuing animals, especially PMU horses. A wonderful read for all animal lovers.
This book is wonderful for all ages as author, Kathleen M. Shurman, fills the pages with a heartwarming story of a group of lonely foals journey to a safe, new home. Using colorful animal characters, each with a mind of their own, Shurman is able to win over readers in a wonderful story that not only entertains, but brings about awareness of the PMU foal adoption program.
