Overview

Feeling tired, stressed or disconnected with God? In this devotional, authors Pam Farrel and Dawn Wilson provide real-life stories mixed with a splash of humor and an encouraging word from God to help women get through hectic days. Joy from God, unlike the fleeting happiness of the world, transforms the soul and helps to heal frazzled, broken women. A cheerful heart is still good medicine (Proverbs 17:22), and women need it in megadoses! There will always be a need for humor to cheer our hearts, and when that humor is paired with powerful truth principles from Scripture, women will be revived and refreshed. To make it fun, the authors have taken Scripture verses and made them into text messages similar to those you might see on your cell phone, but these are from God’s Word.

"LOL with God" is a devotional for women broken down into seventy-eight different "texts" from God to us. Each text begins with a scripture and ends with an "LOL" - a short real-life story to make you laugh. Some of the themes tackle singleness, stress and trusting God. One text titled "Connecting Dots" discusses the latter and really spoke to me in this season of my life: "We often get so focused on specific details that we can't see the big picture. In our attempt to connect the dots of our circumstances, we may miss something more obvious that God is trying to show us.no matter our circumstances, God has a purpose behind each circumstance. We can trust Him because He knows how to connect the scattered dots in our lives." I enjoyed this book. It's written with space for you to jot down thoughts as you read along. I felt as if each text was relevant to me and I could take something from each. I liked the humor incorporated throughout so it wasn't too heavy of a read.

LOL With God: Devotional Messages of Hope & Humor for Women By: Pam Farrel & Dawn Wilson I will admit I was very skeptical about this book. The synopsis said something about the authors being avid "texters" and how the book was written like a "text message" from God. It sounded kinda petty and childish. But I decided to give it a try. Mainly because it was the only thing available for review. Even when I received the book and casually flipped through it, I still wasn't impressed. But once I actually started reading, I realized that the authors take their relationship with God very seriously. The premise of texting wasn't as prominent in the book as I thought it might be, for which I was thankful. As you can tell by the subtitle, this is a devotional book for women. Each devotional is about 3 pages long and includes a short article or thought, a one-two sentence prayer, a few Scriptures related to the topic, and a funny story or anecdote at the end. I was talking with a friend the other day about devotional books and she was expressing her disappointment with some that she has come across because the devotionals are so short--not more than a paragraph, maybe two. The articles/devos in this book are a pretty ideal length in my opinion, especially for those of us who are really busy. The devo itself is probably a page, page and a half. It's not so short that it's missing some of the meat that should be included, but not so long that it takes forever to read. I like my devotional thoughts, especially if it is a daily program, to be short enough that I don't get too much information. I want a simple, concise topic that I can easily keep on my mind and reflect on throughout the day. If you're reading 3-4 points sermons as your devotional, it's a little more difficult. So that was good about this book. The devotionals were about a wide range of topics. Here are just a few: Living joyfully Friendships Living the single life God's providential hand Using your strengths Forgiveness and second chances Temptations Also, the humorous stories at the end are actually quite funny. And clean, of course! I plan on keeping this book on my shelf for future reference teaching classes or something b/c the stories are good and usually have a decent point that you can tie into a lesson. Oh, and as far as the reference in the synopsis to the text messages, pretty much the only part of the chapter dealing w/it was at the very beginning. They would give part of a Scripture in "text lingo" or abbreviations. I thought it was a little weird and maybe overdone. I don't know about yall, but I never abbreviate this much when I'm sending txt messages. For example: "Cst al yr nxty n him bc he crs 4 u." (Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." Or: "W t tmptashn He wl lso prvd t wy o escp." (With the temptation He will also provide the way of escape.) After a while, I just skipped right over that line because it took too much effort to sit there and try to decipher what they were saying. There were a few things that the authors talked about that were a little different from the things that I believe. Like God's role in speaking to us. The authors talk about God speaking directly to them, directing them to do something. I don't believe God speaks directly to us in that way anymore. Other than that though, everything else was pretty middle-of-the-road. Nothing super-li

I was quite intrigued when I first heard about LOL with God. I'm always looking to add devotional study books to add to my shelf and this one though not as deep as some I have it's definitely a keeper. Each daily devotion opens with stories that involve connecting and technology of some sorts topped with a text message that plays part into the daily reading and how we can apply it to our own lives. To tie of the devotion there's four sections; Send up a Message, Text Helps, Your Turn, and LOL. Which translates into a daily a prayer, scripture verses to take to heart, a section to write and convey your thoughts, and the LOL section is basically a short story to makes us smile and go about our day a little more cheerful. I'm not a huge texter so I am pretty thankful that there were translations to many of the phrases and word shortcuts used in this book. I am sure anyone who is an avid texter and is more up on technology than me is going to love this book.

Throughout the book you will not only learn about the scriptures from the Bible relating to each story presented by along the way learn how to text just like your teens do. Here's a classic example of what the book entails: Hw do U kp a txtr in suspense? I'll tel U l8r. Translated: How do you keep a texter in suspense? I'll tell you later! In addition the book is laid out using scripture as a text message then highlights that particular passage with what it means to the authors like any normal devotional followed up with a great story of humor and laughter guaranteed to make you smile and laugh along. I received this wonderful and refreshing book compliments of Tyndale House Publishers for my honest review and can't wait to share some of the insights with my family and friends!
