London After Midnight is a unique fictional tour around the criminal heartland of the capital, bringing together in two volumes classic stories by some of the undisputed masters of the crime and mystery genres: a homage to that area of London bounded by Limehouse to the east and Bayswater to the west which has been stained with the blood of some of the most nefarious and well recorded crimes in history.

If you've ever been intrigued by a story of danger and menace lurking in London's fog enshrouded streets, you can appreciate the theme of this book. Most of the stories were written in the 20'th century and include characters such as Shelock Holmes, Fu Manchu, and Hercule Poirot as presented by their original creators as well as lesser known detectives such as Dr. Lancelot Priestly the mathmatical detective, and Francis Quarles the aristocratic gentleman detective. I was a little disappointed by the Fu Manchu story because it deals with flying saucers and isn't Sax Rohmer's best, but it was written in 1959, shortly before the author's death and was obviously influenced by current movie trends. I was excited by the fact that such a rare story had been included and that greatly influenced my buying the book. In fact, the editor took great pains to include stories by well known mystery authors that would be difficult to find. My favorite was 'The Cave of Ali Baba' by Dorothy L. Sayers about a disturbing secret society.
I havn't read this book but I just ordered it yesterday and can't wait to see what it is about and how good it is I will keep you posted !
