This is actually a very good Brit procedural. Too bad it's overpowered by graphic descriptions of the worst physical aspects of sodomy, whether in the context of consensual sex or rape. In other words, the book lingers on the gross graphic descriptions rather than the impact on the storyline. My advice is to skip this book and, if you want to try this author, start this series at book two. Hopefully the overall writing will be as good or better without the fatal flaws in this one.
