Overview

Look at the Powerful People [LP]

Formation's debut goes to great lengths to re-create the sound of 2000s-era dance-punk bands. The band were already drawing comparisons to LCD Soundsystem, a comparison they have embraced, but on Look at the Powerful People, they expand their homages, with every track recalling a slightly different band. Track one, "Drugs," has DFA written all over it, with similarly effective percussion and direct-to-funky bass; even the vocal delivery is reminiscent of James Murphy. As an opening number, it also exemplifies Formation's approach to their message, which is kept ambiguous so as not to overpower the music itself; after all, they do look politically inclined, with plenty of jackets, chains, and raised fists on show. Admittedly, danceable indie has never been that dependent on clear political statement, and Formation's songwriting alone has enough groove and momentum to get bodies moving. The track list plays out like a who's-who of 2000s dance-punk, with nods to the likes of the Rapture, Death from Above 1979, and of course LCD. The formula changes on penultimate track "Blood Red Hand," whereby Formation apply a softer approach punctuated by loud, yet justified, choruses. Overall, then, Look at the Powerful People carries itself with a touch of swagger, an ear for a danceable tune, and easygoing sense of fun. [Look at the Powerful People was also released on LP.]
