This is a great book.  My children always enjoyed “lift-a-flap” books and we would read them over and over again.  My children are now grown, but my grand-daughter is no different.  This particular book covers the life of Jesus from birth to ministry to crucifixion to resurrection.  The short and simple descriptions give opportunity for further discussion about the life of Jesus.  The illustrations are colorful and very nicely done.  Although the target age of this book seems to be K5 and older, you can easily adapt to a younger children.  The book is only 16 pages long, but each page is detailed enough that you could treat each page as an individual book and spread the reading out over several days or for bedtime stories. It is also a hard-copy book and the pages are thick cardboard type material.  I highly recommend this book as a staple to your library for your children.  It is very good!! (rev. Not sure I would recommend this book. While the idea seems good—to give young readers an idea of what life during the time of Jesus would have been like—I didn't think it was executed very well. There is very little text on each page to explain what you're looking at. I felt like it would have been more helpful to have single words over pictures (more like a beginner book ... think Richard Scarry). Multiple stories from the Bible were referenced on the same two-page spread, and I wasn't sure of the purpose. It seemed confusing to me as an adult ... almost as though the book was trying to say that those stories happened simultaneously when they did not. I would give this book a pass. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Kregel Publications, Lois Rock, and Lorenzo Orlandi have combined efforts to create a delightful children's book about Jesus and his teachings.  Each two page spread colorfully shows the everyday life of the time while also telling about Jesus's life.  At least one lift the flap is found on each spread; many pages have two.  One the first page the shepherds have arrived at the door of the stable; when opened, Mary and Joseph look admiringly at the Christ child, as do the animals. I love that children are present on so many pages, going through their daily routines -- walking to get water with Mom, playing a game on the stone pavement, going to school to learn the Scripture and even playing hide and seek with the pup.  On the pages showing Jesus going to Zacchaeus's luxurious home for dinner, a trio of young children are hidden behind the window, sneaking a peek at the feast.  The inclusion of all these children will help modern children make connections to those times and to what Jesus's presence meant. The text is simple but never silly and doesn't skip over the trial and the crucifixion, and the last flap shows the women finding the empty tomb.  I think there should have been one more two page spread, showing the Risen Christ and the early church which follows, but I still feel this is an excellent book for young families to read together.  Its large format (about 9 x 11 inches per page) makes it an easy book to share for story time.  Pages are sturdy as are the flaps.  Creative adults will be able to have youngsters hunt for something special on each page, varying those hunts on each reading.  I received a copy of THE TIMES OF JESUS from Kregel Publications for review purposes.

I received a copy of LOOK INSIDE: THE TIME OF JESUS, with text by Lois Rock, from Lion Children’s via Kregel. This is known as “a lift-the-flap discovery book.” It is another book I have happily passed on to my young cousins. The rate this with a definite five stars. Not only are the illustrations, done by Lorenzo Orlandi, colorful and engaging, but the book is interactive. It isn’t the type a child can doze through. Rather, it is a book that will captivate a child night after night. Each page features a different location, with an accompanying blurb explaining the significance of that location, such as the stable in Bethlehem (the first location in the book). Questions are posed on the pages to keep the reader thinking, but there are also sentences that describe what is going on, such as “townspeople are woken by the clatter of passers-by” (page 1). The pages contain flaps that can be lifted to show more pictures underneath. If I were reading this with a child, I would take turns with the child telling stories about each of the people featured on the pages. I highly recommend this to families. It will make a great addition to any library.

This is a large, sturdy board book and each spread of pages has several "lift-the-flaps" designed in a variety of sizes that offer engaging educational opportunities for the child. Even though it is a "board book," it will be valuable and enjoyable for young readers as well as non-readers.  Parents can use this as an invaluable teaching tool.  But most of all, it is a very pleasant and lovely book for the child. The child is the important key word here. Engage the child. Educate the child. Help the child to learn of Jesus. This book will successfully do just that. Look Inside the Time of Jesus is spot-on accurate (not an archeological "dig" type of book, though) to Bible times and Bible events. Each picture is replete with details that the child can engage in seek 'n find activities as well as the lift-the-flaps. I like that the flaps each are designed so that little fingers can lift them without difficulty. I heartily endorse this book produced by Lion Hudson and distributed by Kregel. Hint: This would make a terrific Christmas gift for a child.  DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Kregel Publishing in exchange for my review. When I was young, I loved books such as this Look Inside time of Jesus book! Just like the ''I Spy'' books of my childhood, this hardcover book is filled with detailed, colorful illustrations. The detailed pictures encourage children to spend minutes on each page, taking in all the action of every scene. For younger children, this book would easily allow for the game ''I Spy''. For older children, it's still a great vivid picture of life in New Testament times!  A lover of history and accurate representations of it, I admit to expecting this book to be displeasing. On the contrary, the illustrations are done in a style honoring ancient times and the Bible. Although the characters are simply illustrations, as you can see from the cover the garb is historically accurate and the village life is depicted accurately and pleasantly. I do recommend this book for the young people in your life. It will make a great gift this Christmas!  I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion of it.
