In a craftily engineered book, readers transform everyday food items into hidden animals by opening half-page flaps that expand each spread. “Look, it’s 1 donut. Or is it something else?” Baruzzi begins; pulling the flap to the right changes the doughnut into a lounging cat, the golden ring becoming part of the animal’s round face and curling tail. Elsewhere, tuliplike petals of a flower become the combs of three roosters, and a chocolate-brown ice cream pop forms the shells of a group of nine tortoises. The chatty narrative and the sheer imaginative fun of the transformations create a charming guessing game. Up to age 3. (Sept.)

Toddler-PreS—A unique counting book that invites readers to take a closer look at simple objects. Each spread identifies an object, such as a strawberry, and then encourages readers to fold out the page. Deploying a double fold, the images show increasing numbers of animals, from one to 10. White backgrounds and bright illustrations allow for easy counting and will captivate toddlers as each image transforms. The pages and folds are a bit fragile, but this is an ideal option for storytimes featuring guessing or predicting games.

Everyday objects transform into various animals via lifted flaps. "Look, it's 1 donut. Or is it something else?" Across the gutter, readers see an isolated orange doughnut against a white background. With the opening of a double-creased gatefold, the doughnut changes into a white-snouted marmalade cat, with much of the doughnut revealed to be the curve of its tail and the rest its cheek. While many of these metamorphoses are delightful surprises in Baruzzi's friendly, graphically flat cartoons (a tulip transforms into roosters' combs, or a lemon becomes the body of one of 10 chicks), some are strained (the ice cream pop-to-tortoise and carrot-to-rabbit transformations force the critters into odd shapes). The project becomes a counting exercise as the number of each creature increases by one. The gatefold pages are thinner than normal board-book pages, but they should survive several rereadings.
