If you enjoy reading Nelson DeMille, Dan Brown, James Patterson, Tom Clancy you'll probably not be a fan of this book. Though her NATIONAL BOOK AWARD was probably well deserved - her poetic prose and her sophisticated approach of the English language was not an enjoyable read (4 chapters before I returned the book for a refund). As a horse owner and gambler, I foudn it laughable she thinks everyone in the horseracing world has a catchy nickname - there are trainers with simple names of Nick, John, and Carl. I suggest to read the first chapter in the bookstore - if you enjoy it - buy it. If not, don't waste your money.

I knew Jaimy Gordon at Antioch. She was a mistress of the English language then-and the silence of experience that all writing attempts to reach and grasp, and then bless because it cannot grasp it-and she is a goddess of it now. Anything she writes lives on the page and leaps into your mind. Explore her world and learn more about your own. GabeHeilig

This author has the ability to write and to write beautifully and that is what this author has done . And yet i will encourage anyone that likes to read to try this book out on their own tp find what awaits them . I am not gonna go into detail about the book . But totally would recomendbit to just about anyone . Exept for my brother .

I found this book to be filled with characters that I cared little about and relying on gimicky dialogue and horse racing arcana of little interest.

Have to wonder what kind of back track dealing was going on for this one to come up a winner. Not even close to being a realistic snapshot of what goes on behind the scene at the racetracks. Characters were not believable. Too predictable toward what was supposed to be the climatic event.
