A little too much angst for my liking.

I am voluntarily submitting my honest review after receiving an ARC of this ebook via NetGalley. This is the fourth installment of the Rogues to Riches series. It functions well as a standalone novel, but having read some of the previous books in the series, I will say that the book is certainly enriched by having knowledge of the history of the peripheral characters in the story that the previous installments provides. (Simon and Dahlia's story in Lord of Night pertains most specifically to the events in Lord of Temptation, but again, it is not absolutely critical to following the plot.) While I enjoyed this book, it is not my favorite Erica Ridley novel. Like many of the other reviewers, I too could not overcome my dislike of Lord Hawkridge and found Faith's attitude toward him perplexing. SPOILER ALERT!!! \ SPOILER ALERT!!! While wrongs were perpetuated on both sides, his continued arrogant browbeating and demanding behavior a decade later would be hard to move past and forgive. His forcing her into marriage, especially at a time when it looked like all he cared about was her dowry, and then expecting love to ever bloom between them is simply preposterous. Times and attitudes were different then, however, appalling selfishness is appalling selfishness, no matter the milieu. Despite my disgust at Hawk's treatment of Faith, I still recommend Erica Ridley's novels for anyone who enjoys Regency romance that don't follow the typical formulaic patterns. They are witty, unexpected and well-written, fun reads that fans of historical fiction are sure to like.

Lord of Temptation is a second chance romance, one of my favorite troupes. Hawk persued Faith ten years ago, but dropped his courtship when his then-guardian and mother convinced him that marrying a commoner without a suitable dowry was not going to be enough to save his floundering estate. He has regretted giving in to their suggestion ever since, never managed to snag a wealthier wife or to forget his first love and now fate has put her in his path once again--with one major secret and complication he never suspected... This was my first book from this author, so I am not sure if a lot of introspection on the parts of the main characters is the norm for her or merely the way things were for these characters. It seemed as if both Faith and Hawk spent more time within their own heads than they did accomplishing things outside of them. There was a lot of wondering, second-guessing, musing over the past and agonizing about the future going on when I would rather have seen them getting something done--at times it was quite frustrating. Things end well (if a bit conveniently), though, and there are several cute family and couple moments along the way, ending the book on a satisfying note overall. Lord of Temptation is the fourth book in the series, but works just fine as a standalone. Rating: 3 stars / C+ I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

4.5 Stars Two people from seemingly different worlds fall in love at the tender age of 18. She gives herself to him, body and soul. He takes everything she gives believing he can make her his bride. When the harsh truth settles over them the next day, hearts are broken and a decade will pass before they can see one another again. Hawk has worked the ten years to rally his title to a prestigious rank once again. His dream is to open a port at one of his properties and become what his mother detests, a merchant. His problem? Gathering the initial funds to build the port. Completely by chance, he sits at a dinner table with his half-brother, sister-in-law, and the woman he scorned years earlier, Faith Digby. Faith has been keeping a secret tucked closely to her chest for years and the reappearance of Hawk could bring her world down. With the very real threat hanging over her head, she can't help but feel the love she once had burn hotter than ever. Fortunately the feelings aren't one-sided, but the secret rips a hole in their relationship. I've loved all the novels I've read by Erica Ridley and this one was just slightly different. She took a chance and made a choice for Hawk I never saw coming. Some readers might've been turned off by this turn, but for me it made the novel that much more realistic. Yes, this is fiction, but it can't always be hearts and flowers getting to the happily ever after. Ridley made the choice to write the proud, virile Hawk and his reactions to certain situations come from that place. Sometimes raw and painful, but always rang true to his character. When these Rogues make another appearance, I am more than willing to soak up another read from Erica Ridley! I received this book for free. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Interesting historical romance. Hawk and Faith have a history and meet again ten years later. Their first parting wasn't a happy one and there were regretful mistakes made on both sides. Now there may be another chance... Good read. Wasn't happy how Hawk walked away, even at his young age; or how Faith solved her problem, though, again due to age. Love St. Giles, girls and school and how the story ends. Not happy with Hawk's mom especially how she relates to him; in love with Dahlia, her siblings and Chris! Waiting for Bryonny and Heath's stories. Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.

“The years have been both cruel and kind.” This line is perfect to describe the time that Hawkridge and Faith have been apart. They loved each other, but were thwarted by his circumstances and youth. That love is still there, but it will take a lot to make it work, if it is even possible. This is not a meet again, fall into each other’s arms, and find happy ever after sort of tale. There is a lot of hurt and resentment, guilt, and secrets – all sorts of conflict, and they will have to face it and work through it. At stake is not just a second chance for love, but a second chance at life. Hawkridge and Faith are great characters. They seem “normal.” They feel and act like real people would in similar situations. The story is well paced, with a few ups and downs. There is some intrigue and mystery (secrets) and some surprises. The secondary characters are terrific. Hawkridge’s mother is the perfect “Camille.” My favorite is Hawkridge’s brother Simon. How can you not love him? This is a wonderful series. I look forward to the next books.

Lord Zachery Nash, Marquess of Hawkridge is broke and needs to marry an heiress. He is trying to get funding for a port on his estate so that he doesn’t have to marry. When he was eighteen he took Faith Digby’s virginity with the intention of asking her father to marry her. His father dies the same day and he inherits a debt ridden estate. His mother and advisors convince him that Faith is not good enough (because her family is in trade) or rich enough to clear his debts. For ten years he has manage to reduce the debts, he now comes face to face with Faith at his sister-in-law’s school where she is the headmistress. Hawk still loves Faith but thinks she’s still not good enough, until he learns she is an heiress and starts to pursue her. Faith Digby was in love with the Marquess of Hawkridge, until he broke her heart in a letter. She has kept a secret for ten years from Hawk and is worried what he would do when he finds out. She doesn’t trust him but still loves him. She is trying to stay angry with him, but he is making it hard for her. Being young and stupid doesn’t excuse your actions. I feel that Hawk should have inquired of Faith after he broke her heart, made sure there were no repercussions of their actions. The way Faith handled her situation was remarkable, along with her parents who supported her and Christine. This was a great read. I kept waiting for them to tell Christine that they were her parents but it never happened. She has a right to know. This was a great read and I recommend it.

Four and 1/2 stars.....Lord of Temptation (Rogues to Riches, #4)by Erica Ridley .. I was luck to be able to read this book on #NetGalley and it was enjoyable. Hawk (Lord Hawkridge) has to get over a father whose mistress has given him another son on the wrong side of the blanket ..and also has to get over his father and then uncle loosing all the family wealth. Faith is his first love and he plans to wed her when of age...but is told he can't... They never forget their love and ten years later they cross paths...and I can't forget Christina.... There are a lot of feels and bumps in the road on their way to a HEA. I plan to read the first three books and look forward to the next one.

Zachary Nash, Marquess of Hawkridge, spends his time trying to open his port and clean up his father and uncles debt. It has been ten years and he is still working on it. Faith Digby was the commoner that he loved in his youth and still does. Faith still loves him but it has been hard for her. He does not know but she had a baby girl and she adores her. She has not seen him since that night when he walked away from her. The characters are warm and loving. There is an air about them saying, good people. The plot has a couple of twists but it is very entertaining. Erica Ridley is one of my favorite authors and she never disappoints me. The tale flowed well, was well written and even paced. I received this ARC free and voluntarily reviewed it.

another well developed, emotionally charged story about young love. Lord Hawkridge walked away without explanation trying to "do the right thing" and not saddle Faith with his immense debt. She stayed away thinking it was for other reasons. They are brought back together 10 years later, still very much in love with each other, she with a BIG secret and he still trying to pay off his debt. Erica does a great job telling this story , the emotional complexities of love lost and found again and the fears of giving in to your heart.

The lead up in the previous books had always left me wondering just exactly what had happened between Faith and Hawk. I thought it was so sad that the two of them weren’t together. I had never guessed that the circumstances were as tragic as they turn out to be. Their story made me ugly-cry over the heartbreak Hawk and Faith have had to endure. And it made me cry all over again as they get a second chance to right the wrongs they’ve done to each other. This was a beautiful tale about the value of family and personal integrity. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series. I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book.

Three and a half stars. Lord Hawkridge is penniless, desperately trying to rectifying the profligate spending of his predecessors. He is building a dock and needs capital to fund the latest stage whilst trying to pay off some of the estate's creditors. When he goes to his illegitimate older brother's home for dinner he is astonished to run into Faith Digby, the commoner he fell in love with over a decade ago. When Faith and Hawk fell in love he didn't realise the extent of the marquessate's financial difficulties, he was about to propose marriage when his guardian made the situation clear - marry an heiress or live in abject poverty. Since then Hawk has been searching for an heiress to marry without finding anyone who compares to Faith. When he sees her again he knows he is as much in love with her as ever before. Faith was devastated when Hawk made love to her and then sent her a letter the following day breaking off their relationship. Now over a decade later she can't believe she still has feelings for the man who broke her heart. Hawk is torn, he is still in no position to marry or start a family, much as that is his dream, but his love for Faith is strong. When he finds out Faith is an heiress are all his problems solved? Or does this just make things more complicated? Can two former lovers turn a marriage of convenience into a love match? Hawkridge is quite selfish to begin with, all his thoughts are of the marquessate, his mother and the docks. He has no time or compassion for anyone else. When he discovers Faith is an heiress he thinks more about her dowry than anything else. I truly disliked him and was just waiting for his comeuppance (I may have cheered). When he blackmails Faith into marrying him with no care for the woman he (allegedly) loves I was incensed. So it is a tribute to Erica Ridley that by the end of the book I was a little bit in love with Hawk myself. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

A romantic love story that shows there can be a second chance at love. When Zachary Nash and Faith Digby fell in love, neither had a title or riches but as often happens things change. Zachary become Lord Hawkridge when his father died and was left with a hugh amount of debt. He breaks it off with Faith and breaks her heart. Years later, Faith comes into her own and goes from a commoner to a textile heiress. But as fate often does, they meet again and Hawk wants to resume his relationship with Faith even though he has not quite paid off his debt. This is a story of strong emotions, secrets that are well hidden and learning to trust again after heartache. Hawk realizes how much he has lost due to his sense of duty to his family and estate while Faith has devoted herself to protecting and teaching orphans at a boarding school she has half ownership in. Secrets come to light and the two try to find their way to a happy ever after but it is a long road they travel. Part of a series, this can be read as a stand alone but why do that? The entire series is wonderful as all of the stories by Erica Ridley so do yourself a favor and read them all!! Lori Dykes

This second chance romance sees Lord Hawkridge and Miss Faith Digby meeting up ten years after a very difficult breakup. Both had thought they would spend the rest of their lives together married and happy only to have Hawkridge cry off when he found out the arrears his inherited estate was in. He was young and only thinking of what he needed to do and how he could not provide for even himself let alone a wife and she was angry and perhaps did not make the wisest decision at the time. Ten years later Faith has loving parents, good friends, wealth, a ward to care for and professional focus that gave her strength when she met Hawkridge again. He, on the other hand, really did not have much in the ensuing years but debt, his title, a newfound half-brother and the hope of one day being able to do more than pay bills. Their meeting is not easy and neither are most of their further encounters. The two have remained in love with one another over the years but their road to an eventual HEA is complex and at times difficult. I liked this story because it was believable. I loved Faith’s parents. I enjoyed the fact that the H/h story did not have them falling into one another’s arms immediately but instead had them waiting, talking and really looking at the part each had in making the past turn out the way it did as they worked toward a potential future together. I enjoyed this story and am now very interested in reading Lord of Secrets when it comes out. I sort of wonder if Gideon will have a story of his own, too. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

I was gifted a copy of this book. Zachary Nash, Marquess of Hawkridge has inherited an impoverished marquisate and because of that must walk away from the only girl he has ever loved. Ten years later, he collides with Miss Faith Digby at a dinner. He has never stopped loving Faith. But Faith is filled with hurt and a bitter secret. Can Hawk and Faith ever renew their love or will anger and hurt win out in the end? Absolutely loved this book by Ms. Ridley. Ridley develops a story line and characters with layer upon layer of complexity. Like peeling an onion, the reader is lead down a path that is never predictable but very pleasing. “The years had been both cruel and kind. His jaw was stronger, his muscles more defined, his shoulders wider…But the jacket that contained them was faded from repeated use and worn at the seams…. His cheekbones and jaw were impeccably free from whiskers, leaving nothing to distract the eye from that full, sensual mouth Faith remembered so well. His hair was the same dark brown and perfectly coiffed, his eyes the same long lashed hazel, brilliant and captivating. But she would not let herself be captivated. Not again. Not by one such as him.” I highly recommend this book – actually all of the books in this series. Even though they can be read as stand alones…the stories are richer when read in a series.

Lord of Temptation is a tale of duty and honor. The odds were stacked against a pair of star crossed lovers, but love found a way. Hawk and Faith have a history. Their love happened fast, burned hot and left a lasting impression on their souls. He broke her heart and now he wants the chance to mend it. Ten years and one secret too late. Can the pain of the past, be healed by the hope for the future? Ms. Ridley takes her cue from the classics and crafts a tale of broken dreams, battered hearts and maybe a happy ending.
