Lord of the Abyss / Desert Warrior by Nalini Singh

Once upon a time…the Blood Sorcerer vanquished the kingdom of Elden. To save their children, the queen scattered them to safety and the king filled them with vengeance. Only a magical timepiece connects the four royal heirs. Now they must return and save Elden…and time is running out….

As the dark Lord who condemns souls to damnation in the Abyss, Micah is nothing but a feared monster. He has no idea he is the last heir of Elden. Only one woman knows—the daughter of his enemy. Liliana sees past his impenetrable black armor to the prince inside. To help Micah remember, she must brave his dark, dangerous lair. Because they only have until midnight to save Elden.

This book is wonderful. The character development is superb and the action keeps your interest from beginning to end. In typical Nalini Singh fashion, she has interwoven a wonderful and unique plot with great romance. I have read all her books and highly recommend her as an author who will never let you down.

As always - even though it's part of a series whose other books I haven't read - Nalini shows her superiority in characterization and world building. And to those who'd say she didn't create this world but collaborated with other authors, well, it's even more difficult to keep that thrad of continuity alive. Just witness the truly terrible ending to the 2007 Nocturne "Raintree" trilogy which began with Linda Howard's great Raintree: Inferno which left you wanting more of the story. The second one by another author was pretty good, but the third had no redeeming qualities and the most hateful "hero" in series romance. I agree that this one was a play on Beauty and the Beast with the twist that the girl was pretty ugly...and that made it even more wonderful when the Lord of the Abyss, the supposed monster, fell for her. This one had deep love, very sensual sex, magic, adventure and redemption for both characters...and the secondary characters of Jissa, Bard and mouse were lovely, too. Nothing here not to love. And pay the extra money for the e-edition that has Desert Warrior if you love a good Sheikh romance...again with the lovely romance, smoochy sex (that means it's got heart behind it), and redemption for two beautifully drawn characters. Other romance authors will have to step up their game as Ms. Singh is spoiling us with her continuing excellence.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I can't wait to read the others of this series. It was an easy read. Her other books, the Archangels Series are fantastic. I highly recommend those as well.
