Philip José Farmer in his new book, “Lord of the Trees” a new book in Wold Newton series published by Titan Books gives us the sequel “A Feast Unknown”. From the back cover: Behold the secrets of the Nine The Nine–A sinister cabal of ancient and powerful immortals–have secretly ruled mankind for over thirty thousand years. Lord Grandrith, the legendary ape-man, had once been their servant. Now, appalled by their tyranny, he is determined to overthrow his diabolical former masters. But how can he destroy what will live forever? Tarzan is back. Well, maybe, not quite Tarzan but, certainly, an alternate reality version of Tarzan. And Lord Grandrith is not alone. He teams up with his half-brother, the bronze hero of Technopolis, James “Doc” Caliban. I suppose that Mr. Farmer grew up with the legendary pulp heroes and wanted to write more stories about them. I say this because “Doc” Caliban is the alternate reality version of none other than Doc Savage. Both heroes join forces to battle with The Nine a sinister organization that rules humanity. ”Lord of the Trees” is a good adventure yarn that certainly shows quite a bit of imagination. There are moments when it slows down and moments of utter weirdness but , other than that, a pretty good story. I am looking forward to more stories in this series.
