Lost Highway Saloon

An ongoing bout with spastic dysphonia, a disorder that wreaks havoc on the vocal cords, hasn't diminished Texas honky-tonk legend Johnny Bush's ability to sell a song. Even if he can't leap octaves as he once did, Bush remains one of the finest traditional country singers around, a fact he proves again and again on Lost Highway Saloon. "Wish I'd Seen Your Going Coming" finds the band (including legendary country sidemen Bobby Emmons on steel guitar and Hargus "Pig" Robbins on piano) laying down a wistful rhythm as Bush evokes the heartbreak of a man whose love blinded him to his partner's faithlessness. The honky-tonk heartbreaker "The Wall" gets some added juice from a searing vocal guest shot by Leona Williams, whose voice blends beautifully with Bush's to lay on the ache. Kate McCarthy joins Bush for a lusty, blues-drenched version of Bush's low-down reading of "I'll Never Be Free," originally a 1951 hit for Tennessee Ernie Ford and Kay Starr. When all else fails, the swinging "Home to Texas" is Bush's humorous prescription for healing.
