In Lotta's village there are no Christmas trees for sale, for the deep snow has made it impossible to bring in trees from the forest. Lotta has an errand in the village, however, and while there, a surly truck driver with a load of trees destined for the big city pulls into the station, gasses up, and refuses to sell one tree to the little five year old. But as he drives off too fast, a tree falls from the load and Lotta carries it home on her sled. The happy family then decorates the ``Lotta tree.'' Lively paintings with cockeyed angles depict this small Swedish village with a bold charm. The story is long, however, and only patient listeners will share in Lotta's eventual triumph.
