Love at First Flight: Adventures, Exploits, Sacrifices, Risks and Rewards by William Stewart (Bud) Orr, Fran E. Orr

Love at First Flight: Adventures, Exploits, Sacrifices, Risks and Rewards—a memoir written by two outstanding Americans: a courageous naval pilot, Bud Orr, whose career spanned 27 years and his loving wife, Fran.

This volume is an honest, beautifully crafted story of Bud and Fran’s inspiring relationship, a testament to their deep love and service to their country. And, it is a page-turning account of a sterling military career, complete with adrenaline-filled descriptions of a daring pilot flying many dangerous missions in advanced warplanes—including the AV-8 Harrier, one of the most difficult airplanes to ever fly.

Readers will be inspired by this true American love story, where two very different lives came together—through fate, chance or blind luck—to create a successful, loving model family; ever displaying the strengths and patriotism that keep American military families together.

Love at First Flight is a powerful reminder about the real sacrifices that men and women in the Armed Services must make to preserve a relationship, and the incredible rewards that come with that sacrifice.

Like a catapult launch off an aircraft carrier, Bud and Fran's story will propel readers through recent history—from the Vietnam War to current day America. A tender, moving and inspiring volume, Love at First Flight is the perfect gift for any military member, military family or military historian.

Reviewed by Jean Hall for Readers' Favorite Real love, courage, and grief burn through the pages of this memoir. Naval aviator William Orr and his long-time, loving wife Fran show bravery and vulnerability in Love at First Flight: Adventures, Exploits, Risks, Sacrifices and Rewards. Retired Captain "Bud" Orr gets his Wings of Gold in the Navy and his heart of gold with Fran. Bud enjoys and endures many heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping experiences as a jet pilot. But not all of Bud's time is spent in the cockpit or on the flight deck. There is carousing and story-telling in the officer's club. Bud Orr wakes up, hung over, to the sloppy and smelly kisses of his pet Boo-dog. He tries to shake off the disappointments and mistakes of his first marriage. Then a lovely rose comes along for a blind date and the rest is history with the "good Navy wife" Fran. William Orr and his wife Fran alternate writing this passionate memoir. Fran rises from dust-bowl poverty and a chaotic migrant farmer's life. She becomes a successful boutique business owner in her own right. The couple shares their sexual intimacy, deep love, and their human conflict. Terms of aviation were not an obstacle but a highlight to the memoir. There is also a glossary of colorful and technical terms at the close of the book. The heartbreaking loss of life in the air, water, and aboard aircraft carriers was sudden and shocking. The story doesn't shy away from the couple's personal flaws and this realism makes William and Fran Orr's Love at First Flight instantly attractive.
