Overview

Sherrié Austin brings a lot of heart to her vocalizing and its high nasal twang. It gets under your skin, and if you pay attention, you'll be rewarded. Austin, who wrote one song (the buoyant statement of purpose "All That Matters") and cowrote all but one of the others on this, her second album, knows how to bring a good hook home. More important, her insights into relationships both new and troubled and her declarations of self-sufficiency are delivered with sassy, credible conviction. The powerhouse hit "Never Been Kissed" is one of the great mainstream singles of the decade -- as infectious as it's sharply observed. "Heart be still/Heart be strong," she sings in "Heart Hold On," one of the beautiful, pulsating advisories to the lovelorn on LOVE IN THE REAL WORLD. Those words seem to be Austins mantra; her triumph is in fashioning it into captivating music.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Maria Konicki Dinoia
Sherrie Austin's sophomore album, Love in the Real World is a bit of a disappointment. This sweet-sounding Aussie left us reeling for more after her first album, Words, but only teases us with her second. The album's first release, "Never Been Kissed" retains the bubbly and contemporary sound of her more popular hits from the first album, "Lucky in Love" and "Put Your Heart Into It." But Love in the Real World leaves it up to us to decide if she's actually singing country or pop. And trying too hard to be both, Austin makes us feel like she doesn't belong in either genre.
