I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Like other reviewers, I am from Texas, although not this region of Texas. However, don't forego this book just because you're not Texan! It's a wonderful story, rich with characters, vivid scenery, and an unforgettable heroine, made even more special because it is based on a true historical figure's life. Do yourself a favor and settle down with a cup of hot tea and this delightful book!

Back in the mid to late 70's my nana gave me this book. Reading it was such a wonderful experience....I have yet to understand why more people have never read it or why it has never been made into a movie. The characters are unforgettable, the east texas caddo lake region is beautiful and it is based on history. Truely worth the read.

This book had such an impact on me! I'm a native East Texan and nature lover, with a headful of childhood memories of Caddo Lake. Harriet is my hero! I am making a trip to Potter's Point as soon as I can get there!

I LIVE ONLY A FEW MILES FROM POTTER'S POINT. NOW AS I GO THERE I CAN SEE THE BOOK TRULY COME TO LIFE....HARRIET WAS A REMARKABLE WOMAN.

I read this book for my book club and was very pleased with it. I really think this would make and excellent miniseries. It is a long story but easy to read and is a real page turner. Harriet is a Real Woman, not like that Hussy Scarlett O'Hara.

Our family received this book as a gift and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it as a family (daughter 15 included). It has sparked out interest in rading more Texas history stories of this era. Wonderful story, well written, and I agree with the review of this being put in the form of a screen play ... marvelous reading!

I have to agree that this book is just breathtaking even though I am not finished yet.  I would LOVE to see it in a miniseries.... the story really lends itself well to that format.  Harriet is such a strong, self-reliant, interesting character you get to see evolve through her relationships and through her personal trials as well as the wars that helped form our country.  As a Texan, I am so proud to see a real woman of indomitable spirit be portrayed at a pivotal moment in Texas history.  Can't wait to pass this treasure on to the women in my life.
