Overview

Within hours, a baby boy unexpectedly goes from his crib to the pediatric intensive care unit as he begins the fight for his life. What initially appears to be liver failure is later diagnosed as Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis and the only cure is a successful bone marrow transplant. But what happens when that doesn't work, and the doctor gives up on him? As if that wasn't enough, the family then receives news that their other child somehow carries the same, extremely rare genetic mutation and could die at any moment. This story is a family's unbelievable journey through the depths of hell and living through every parent's worst nightmare, twice. And then out of nowhere, they receive the ultimate gift, sent from above. You will be amazed at their unconditional love, dedication and their fortitude to leave a legacy-that love does trump grief.

Kristin Akin lives in St. Louis with her family. She stays busy working on their nonprofit foundation, The Matthew and Andrew Akin Foundation and volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. Looking back now, being a communications major at the University of Tulsa and writing so many papers has proven its value as she completes her first book. She loves cooking and entertaining, traveling and just laughing as much as life will allow. In her next life, she will finally be the pilot she always dreamed of being.

Powerful book, and well written. At times, reading a persons' life experience can leave the reader feeling somewhat detached, or relayed in a very difficult to read manner. Mrs Atkins articulates clearly, brings the reader along in the experience, and this adds a powerful impact: some stories I read and the memory fades the story rather quickly. With the Atkins' family experience, and the way it was conveyed, I think I may carry this with me the rest of my life. Of course, we often view life differently through the lenses of others' experiences, this book contains a pair of glasses you really need to look through.

Wow! The Akin Family has traveled down a road I never want to find. What a heartbreaking, yet inspiring story- I could not put this book down. They have reminded me that the best things in life aren't things.

Absolutely heart wrenching and inspiring!!!!! Kristin- thank you for sharing your personal story. I cannot begin to imagine how excruciating it was to relive it while sharing with the world. I know your sone are so proud of both of you and understand every unfathomable hard decision you and your husband had to make. I took your advice and pulled out the video camera and began recording our family playing in our backyard. I hugged my daughter a little tighter and longer while holding back my tears thinking about your story. I enjoyed your quotes at beginning of every chapter so much that I'm printing them up and hanging them on my mirror to look at everyday. Thanks again for sharing and God bless!

Just finished reading this book in less than 24 hours! This story is heart wrenching, but one that you MUST READ...PLEASE, if you are a parent, love a child or think there are things you can not overcome...you MUST read this book!!! I have been touched by their story, and will carry their story with me forever. I hope that the way I parent my children is changed because I have read this book!

Every parent should read this book whether you have a perfectly healthy child or a critically ill child. Their strength, compassion, selflessness and unconditonal & everlasting love for their sons is something that Kristin so honestly and beautifully conveys. The raw emotions are so eloquently articulated and makes this book one that you can't set down. God bless this family through their heart-wrenching journey and all bone marrow transplant patients and their families.

This family is amazing. It had me in tears, but in awe at the same time of everything this family has gone through. I read it in one day! Its amazing that everything this family has gone through, they still have faith. Kristin is a wonderful writer, being able to tell her story in such detail and honesty. If you don't know anything about HLH, like me it is still a good book. I would suggest anyone that has dealt with HLH in any way to read it.
