A Stirring Story of Love and Faith and America's Great Promise

When her mother suffers a stroke, medical student Deirdre O'Leary makes the difficult choice to put her career on hold to care for her. Dr. Matthew Clayborne is renowned for his amazing results with patients, but when Deirdre approaches him about helping her mother, she finds him challenging and surly. Deirdre has had enough of complicated men in her life. After her fiancé left her, she vowed never to give a man that kind of power again.

Widower Dr. Matthew Clayborne is devoted to two things: his work with wounded soldiers and his four-year-old daughter, Phoebe. He won't abandon either of these priorities to care for one older woman. However, when Phoebe suffers a health scare, they're offered respite at the Irish Meadows farm, where his daughter's weakened lungs can recover—but only if he cares for Mrs. O'Leary.

Matthew intends to hate Irish Meadows, yet he immediately feels at home, and soon both Mrs. O'Leary and Phoebe are showing improvement. But since he has no intention of leaving his life up north forever, and Deirdre has sworn off marriage in favor of her career, how will they deal with the undeniable attraction between them?

The third book of the Courage to Dream series features grown up Deirdre and Connor O'Leary as they make their way in the world. It was very comfortable to spend time with the O'Leary family for the wonderful conclusion to this series. A reader could easily read this book as a stand-alone, but it was richer for me, having "known" the family. There were many joys, sorrows, and surprises to experience throughout this book. I highly recommend it! Fans of historical romance will certainly enjoy reading this book. I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

Susan Anne Mason concludes her Courage to Dream series with a novel about the two youngest members of the O’Leary family. Eight years have passed since the events of the previous book and Connor and Deidre are all grown up. This was a bit of a stunner for me who remembered Deidre as a little girl hugging her older sisters. Now, she looks on enviously as those sisters enjoy family life while she intends be a doctor. She’s already a nurse and therefore she’s the one to assist when her mother has a stroke. It’s also the reason she’s sent to Toronto to persuade Matthew Claybourne to come to the USA to treat her mother. Meanwhile at home, her brother has been tasked with bringing a race horse back from injury. It seems an impossible task until a new stable hand going by the name of Joe displays skills worthy of a horse whisperer. But something doesn’t seem quite right about Joe and Connor is determined to learn the truth about his new employee. This was a pleasant read focusing on life after World War I. Matthew is a physical therapy specialist, a discipline still in its early days at this time. It’s an element I found interesting because my husband is a physical therapist. The characters are appealing and sympathetic and the story of Matthew’s daughter tugs at the heartstrings. Although Love’s Faithful Promise is the third title of a series, I think it can be enjoyed without having read the other two books first. I do recommend reading them, however, to better appreciate the family dynamics. Throughout the series, for example, we see the gradual transformation of the family patriarch James O’Leary. It’s fitting that the series should end on a scene with him thinking back on the past and also looking to the future. Thank you to Bethany House for my complimentary electronic advance copy of Love’s Faithful Promise.

I’ve really enjoyed this series and I’m sad to see my time with the O’Leary family has come to an end. This story is just as enjoyable as the ones before it, the characters just as loveable and the romance just as sweet. It has the perfect blend of historical detail, surprising plot twists, and endearing family relationships. Can you tell I liked it just a little? Matthew and Deirdre made great leading characters. I loved their hearts. They each grew significantly through the story’s ups and downs. Matthew is carrying a lot of guilt and regret when he first meets Deirdre. Her warm, ambitious personality strikes against his guarded heart and sparks fly. Their differences really compliment each other. He’s levelheaded and cautious while she’s vibrant and full of faith. The other O’Leary family members played their own fun roles in the story and Matthew’s daughter, Phoebe, shined as well. There’s more than one love story also, which made my heart happy. The story took me places I didn’t expect and I thoroughly enjoyed the twists. As the scenes unfolded, I found myself holding my breath in anticipation. The End was sweet and satisfying. I highly recommend this author and this series. I received a free copy from the publisher. No review, positive or otherwise, was required—all opinions are my own.

Deirdre is a medical student on her way to becoming a doctor when her mother's stroke takes her home. Her dad hates to ask her to leave school, but Deirdre is the best person in the family to take care of her mother. When a family friend hears about the stroke he recommends a Dr. Clayborne who has experienced great results in his work with paralyzed patients. After working for years with war veterans he hopes to expand his practice to include stroke victims. Deirdre just needs to convince him that leaving the country and his practice for a short time to help her mother is the right choice. This book had pros and cons for me. The pros were the double story line. I thought having the small story of the main characters brother added depth and an interesting element. I actually liked the story line for that one better than the main one. I also liked the visual that the author created for the reader. She did a great job of making the story come alive, scenery wise, without bogging the reader down with too many unneeded details. All of the characters seemed well developed and had depth. The cons for me was the flat places in the plot, the extensive drama and angst that the main characters kept going through repeatedly, and the weak spots that occasionally appeared in what I considered the "faith element" of the story. I often felt like I was reading a regular novel instead of a Christian one. Overall, this was an interesting story and won't stop me from picking up another book by this author, but it wasn't a favorite. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is the third book in the Courage to Dream series. I love every book that is set at Irish Meadows. Deirdre wants to become a doctor and Mathew is a doctor. He has a new therapy to help people with strokes and other health issues. Deirdre and her family learn of him when their other suffers a bad stroke. Deirdre needs to leave her schooling to become a doctor to help her mother. She loses a whole semester. She must work closely with Mathew to learn his techniques so he can move back to Toronto with his daughter. I laughed and cried during this book. This is a wonderful historical romance. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion.

Love’s Faithful Promise is Book 3 in the Courage to Dream series, and you will not be disappointed at all, it is an awesome addition to the first two books, and if your like me, when it is ended you will be wanting more! This is Deidre O’Leary’s story the nurse who wants desperately to become a doctor, and at the early part of the twenty-century it was a very difficult task. This story begins with her mother having a stroke and her desire to get her the best possible help, and when Dr. Matthew Clayborn is located in Toronto Canada, she is sent on a mission to convince him to come to help. So the paths of these two individuals are set into motion, and their fate rests within them, and all that love them. Deidre with her dreams, and Matthew with his feeling of failure, and a loveless marriage behind him, but his little daughter may just be the answer to all that is going on between them. There is also a new hired hand on the ranch, and another member of the family is about to open their own doors. A great read, and the only bad part was coming to the end and turning the last page. I received this book through Net Galley and Bethany House Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review

Have you ever read a story that you wanted to read as slow as possible to savor every word? I felt that way with this story. I absolutely loved the story of Deirdre and Matthew. I will miss the O’Leary family, but the ending was pretty satisfying. I highly recommend this book! (Full review at my website)

I have liked the other books in this series. This one was a good ending to the series. I found myself falling more in love with the O'Leary family the more I read. Susan writes in a way that keeps you interested but can still get that special point out that she is trying to give. The side story got a little teen like at times but the overall story is well worth the read. I am very interested to see what Susan will come up with next. I have enjoyed this series and would say it's worth the read. I received this book for free from the author. A positive review was not required. All opinions expressed are my own.

A Fully Satisfying Conclusion to the Series! There is something bittersweet in saying goodbye to characters I have read about for multiple books, especially when it is a family saga and it continues to follow those from previous novels. But Love’s Faithful Promise is a fully satisfying conclusion to the Courage to Dream series, giving a fond send off to the O’Leary family that has found a place both in my heart and on my forever bookshelves. This book follows twins Connor and Deirdre, and as with previous installments in the series, we get two wonderful romances in one. I enjoyed following both storylines, and the love interests were different yet spirited in both cases—there are no wilting flowers in the O’Leary clan it seems, whether born into it or joining it by marriage! Dreams for the future play a large part in this plot in many different situations. What do we give up to pursue them? Is anything more important than them? Do they change over time? What happens when our dreams collide with a loved one’s hope for their future? I appreciate how Mason is unafraid to place her characters in difficult situations and write realistic passages that don’t resort to clichéd answers, yet still find good and hopeful solutions that fit with the characters and storyline she has created. Faith doesn’t always come easy for everyone, either, especially in a world with tragic history from both the battlefield and at home. Again, the author deftly avoids pat answers and allows us to watch the characters struggle with questions and emotions that aren’t pretty, but they, and the reader, can come through the doubts stronger for facing them. This conclusion has left me smiling, appreciating the legacy a family can leave behind—in this case a beautiful tribute to faith and family. Readers who enjoy historical romance, especially family sagas, will not want to miss any of the books in this series. I highly recommend it for high school readers on up. I received a free copy of this book from the author and publisher but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

Susan Ann Mason caught my interest from the very first page. Love's Faithful Promise is the third book in the Courage to Dream series. I have now read all three books, and loved them all. That being said you can totally enjoy any of the books as a stand alone as well. Each book also has a smaller love story mixed in, so it's like two for the price of one. This story is set in 1922 and mostly takes place at Irish Meadows. Irish Meadows is a place where family comes first, and the love they have for each other is undeniable. I love seeing the family dynamic, and can almost picture myself as part of their family. This story follows Deidre and Matthew as they struggle to find out what their future is supposed to look like. Deidre O'Leary has a big family. When she receives word that her mother is at the hospital, she knows she must put her schooling on hold and do anything she can to help this amazing woman. Being a nurse has its advantages and her medical training is a huge asset. As soon as the O'Leary family hears about a doctor who specializes in physical therapy they know they need to get him to Irish Meadows. With her medical knowledge and persuasive personality Deidre is the perfect choice to convince him to come. Little does she know, Matthew Claybourne isn't so easily persuaded. Can she convince the stubborn doctor to help? Matthew has worked hard to get where he is. Helping the soldiers that came back wounded gives his life purpose. His beautiful daughter Phoebe is fragile, and the last thing he wants to do is take her away from everything she's known and stay in the countryside. But when her doctor suggests just that, Matthew feels he has little choice. When they arrive at Irish Meadows he worries that it will all be too overwhelming for his daughter, but soon learns that country life isn't so bad. There are dangers everywhere, but there is also beauty and fresh air. Can Matthew really help the O'Leary family? This was so much fun to read! Mason surprised me with several twist and turns. I really enjoyed the mixture of romance, with the perfect dash of suspense here and there. I loved getting to know the family better and meeting the new additions. This book was a great way to end the series. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction. I received a copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

This last of the Courage to Dream trilogy is a lovely story of the push-pull between two people with huge family responsibilities. He's a doctor who's developed therapies that may actually give wounded soldiers a new life. She's a medical student who's put her career on hold to help her mother who's had a stroke. Both have one thing on their minds and it's not romance. This last book in the series is a beautiful story about the youngest O'Leary children, Deirdre and Connor. Both have a push-pull romance that results in a definite a page-turner. So much love amid the beautiful twin historical settings of Toronto and New York, Mason weaves the two stories together, developing each romance while adding in turmoil and suspense.  And because I'd read the other books in this series, I loved re-visiting the other O'Leary family members, catching up on what had happened since I'd read their book. If you love historical, romantic tales with bustling families, horses, and medical adversity, you'll love this book. Mason is an excellent writer and I was thrilled to receive a copy of Love's Faithful Promise in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Love’s Faithful Promise had it all. Characters that you’ll fall in love with, ones you’ll root for and the ones that just claims your heart even if they’re a minor character only. Deirdre, Kathleen, Phoebe, Connor, Jo, Sean and of course Matthew all played a wonderful role in Love’s Faithful Promise that I couldn’t help but be excited for. Tenacious and vivacious Deidre (Dee) and the reserved and serious Matthew made a compelling pair. From the beginning, I was onto their romantic story. How will two very career-oriented individuals living in different countries come to terms about their feelings? Then we had the bonus story of Connor and Jo! Connor, headstrong with a good heart, and Jo, quiet and loyal, their encounters to their beginning, will not be disappointing. Characters aside, the plot and pacing of Love’s Faithful Promise was spot on. The writing was engaging and entertaining. The romance was realistic and o-so yummy, with its angst and sweet moments. Dee & Matthew’s first kiss, first hug, and first hand-holding does something in your heart – be it beat faster, stopped for a second there or just warm and fuzzy, it will get a reaction. The message hits home. Go, reward yourself with Susan’s writings, especially with Love’s Faithful Promise. Feel free to gush all over it with me. This review first appeared on Just Commonly blog. Final installment does not disappoint. Again, extremely detailed and several characters with different points of view. Matthew Clayborne carries heavy burdens from his past, failed marriage. Now a widower raising a fragile young girl, he is desperate to provide for her, while not letting anyone in to break his heart again. He splits his time between his daughter, and helping rehabilitate wounded soldiers with new physical therapy techniques. Deirdre O’Leary, a young nurse, aspiring to one day become a pediatrician, has been sent by her father to convince the doctor to leave Canada and travel to Irish Meadows in New York, in order to help her mother who recently suffered a stroke. She is bold and determined to persuade the stubborn doctor, or learn the techniques herself. There is another story that takes place between Jo, a stable hand, and Connor O’Leary set amongst the wonderful O’Leary horses. It is a great story as well. It’s like reading two books in one. The relationship between the O’Leary parents and really the entire family is so endearing and enjoyable. It’s a family you want to visit or be a part of. There is a lot of kindness and love there. There are also dangerous moments that send the heart rapidly beating, such as when young nephew get a little too adventurous. And there is faith and prayer as well. The weather is crisp and cool, until finally it snows, so I enjoyed reading this book in Autumn (-smile). The cover of this book was another gorgeous picture that grabbed me instantly. The back shows Irish Meadows covered in snow tucked behind the leafless trees of winter. Thank you to Bethany House and the author for an advance copy to review as part of the Influencer Team. An incredible way to wrap up a wonderful series! In my mind this is the final book in a “true” series. All the same characters are here and their lives have progressed in a very normal way. It was wonderful to see how both Connor and Deirdre turned out now that they are all grown up. They were sweet as the much younger siblings in the first two books. But they have come into their own with dreams and love interests to sort out and. I found that I really liked both Matthew Clayborne and Jo Miller. They were both hard-working and dependable characters. They each had family issues that they had to sort out before they could look at the possibility of falling in love. The path that they each took was unique and well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing how all the different family units within the O’Leary clan worked together to deal with difficulties. The support and encouragement that they gave to one another was fantastic. I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion. Love’s Faithful Promise by Susan Anne Mason is the third book in Courage to Dream series. It is September in 1922 in New York. Deirdre O’Leary has returned from Boston University when she hears her mother has had a stroke. Deirdre is studying to be a doctor in Boston. The family needs Deirdre to return home to care for her mother, Kathleen (they are rich and couldn’t hire a nurse?). Kathleen will need someone trained in physical therapy to assist her, and Dr. Matthew Clayborne comes highly recommended. He is trained in physiotherapy. He spent a year in England after the war training in it. But Dr. Clayborne will not leave Toronto. He is a widow and responsible for his daughter, Phoebe. Phoebe is in fragile health. Deirdre will not take no for answer and travels to Toronto to try and persuade the doctor. When Phoebe ends up needing a country climate to recuperate, Dr. Clayborne agrees to take on Kathleen as a patient. They will stay at Irish Meadows. But taking Phoebe out of the country does not sit well with Dr. Clayborne’s in-laws when they find out. Phoebe has grown close to Deirdre and does not wish to return to Canada. Phoebe ends up traveling with the duo. What can they do so Dr. Clayborne can keep custody of his beloved daughter? Connor O’Leary is taking over for Sam, head trainer and stable manager, while he is away. Sam had hired a new stable hand before he departed. But there is something strange about this new hand. Josephine “Jo” Miller needs this job. She cannot risk losing it, but trouble arises when the heart becomes involved. Join the O’Leary family for one last installment in Love’s Faithful Promise. Love’s Faithful Promise was enjoyable to read and it was a good finale to the series. It was nice to see Connor finally find happiness. We get to catch up with all the characters from the first two novels in Courage to Dream series. It is a mushy and predictable novel, but I did like it. The writing drew me in. The characters are likeable (friendly). The messages in the novel are forgiveness, the power of prayer, having faith, God’s unfailing love, and relying on God’s wisdom and timing. I give Love’s Faithful Promise 4 out of 5 stars. It is a very good Christian historical romance novel. I look forward to reading more books by Susan Anne Mason in the future. I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. The comments and opinions expressed are strictly my own.

Saturday, September 24, 2016 Love's Faithful Promise by Susan Anne Mason, © 2016 Courage to Dream series, Book 3 The younger O'Leary children have grown up! 1922 Deirdre O'Leary has completed nurses training and now is in medical studies at Boston University. Upon receiving a telegram that her mother has had a stroke leaving paralysis, she is on a train to New York. A month earlier she had been working at the same hospital in Manhattan. Now Mama is in a silent room. Deirdre's father requests, with her medical understanding, that she travel to Canada to talk to a young doctor about coming to Irish Meadows to apply his experience with physical therapy to his wife's stricken limbs. Aiding injured soldiers in his practice on staff at the Toronto Military Hospital and personally attending his young daughter's delicate health following tuberculosis two years earlier, have been his immediate focus. With his wife, Priscilla, dying from the same disease, Dr. Matthew Clayborne is not prone to leave to manage a single patient in Long Island. A turn in young Phoebe's health demands that along with Phoebe's nanny, Miss Shearing, they begin their journey ~ for a month. Fresh air at Irish Meadows has begun to do wonders in strengthening Phoebe's body and outlook. So different from the confines of the city, she has gotten some color to her cheeks... and laughter so long ago heard. The stable brings a few surprises as new employee "Jo/Joe" stands in for her newly hired brother ~ who is working in his father's place after an injury prevents him from beginning his new position! What a web is woven for Connor O'Leary to sift through. As the seasons turn from one to another in the normal progression, hearts are turned from an expectation of just carrying on. For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 30:17 Summer winds bend to turning of leaves, to the bare limbs of winter. Within, limbs are being restored through exercise and Mrs. O'Leary is adding to the healing of a heart in Dr. Clayborne. A mother's touch to add a restoration to ungleaned memories left in the shade of days gone by. The ending of this series brings the beginning of hope to those unfettered by disillusions never intended. ***Thank you author Susan Anne Mason for a review copy through Bethany House Publishers of the third book in her Courage to Dream series surrounding Irish Meadows! This review was written in my own words. No other compensation was received.***

The two youngest O'Leary siblings, Deirdre and Connor, have the spotlight here in book 3. Connor has been working his way up the ranks in the family business and Deirdre is a nurse and medical student in Boston. Deirdre is an intelligent, compassionate, and gifted healer. Deirdre won't take no for an answer from rehabilitation expert, Dr. Matthew Clayborne. She's so determined to obtain the very best care for her mama. Matthew is stuck in the mire of fear and burying himself in his work. The pain of his past has nearly paralyzed him and keeps him from truly experiencing life. Connor's love interest shows up in a most unexpected form and that's all I'll say about that since spoilers aren't nice. Oh, bittersweet goodness!!! I can't say enough about this wonderful family saga. I requested the opportunity to read and review this title through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

Two romances for the price of one! The third and last book in this series covers the love stories of the two youngest children of James and Kathleen O’Leary—Deirdre and Connor. Deirdre’s tale is the main story, but Connor’s is just as sweet. The author knows how to create believable characters that will become friends from the start. Not all characters are perfect and that makes them so loveable and enjoyable. Matthew’s life is kind of sad and he has sworn off love and marriage forever. How Deirdre can ever reach him seems unlikely and it’s hard to imagine a romance between those two, especially since Deirdre has dedicated her life to her future patients as she is studying to be a doctor. Despite Matthew’s reluctance, his heart is not made of stone and love blossoms where it seems impossible. Lots of twists and turns are to be found in this beautiful romance, keeping you glued to the pages! The book can be read as stand-alone, but I recommend reading the other titles in the series as well as you will most certainly fall in love with the O’Leary family—just as I did—and want to know more about them. I’m a bit sad to say goodbye to the O’Leary’s, but also looking forward to the author’s new work.

This is book three in the Courage to Dream series, however I feel it is a stand alone book. I have not read book one or two and had no problem keeping up with what was going on. I do feel like I probably missed some history on the O'Leary family, and probably some good books as well, but it is not necessary to understand this novel. Susan Anne Mason does a great job developing her characters, their history and putting you right in their time period. You feel you have been surrounded by the O'Leary family and their loved ones. Deirdre O'Leary is only trying to help her mother recover, even if it means she must give up a dream or maybe even just put it on hold for a while. When this determined, high spirited woman clashes with Dr. Matthew Clayborne, one of the only doctors that can possibly help her mother, is Deirdre prepared for his down trodden attitude? Dr. Matthew Clyborne is a committed doctor, yet when Deirdre rushes into his life, he is not quite prepared for all that will follow. Will Matthew find the help he needs for his daughter only to loose her? This novel is almost two in one. I loved the intertwining of not only Deirde and Matthew but of Conner and Jo. This novel is packed with love, family, living with past choices, moving on and so much more. I was given a copy of this novel from net galley for my honest opinion.

With tears in my eyes and a smile on my face, I closed the pages of the final book in the Courage to Dream series. My heart is filled with warmth, yet filled with sadness that this series is now complete. I have enjoyed watching the O'Leary family grow in numbers and in love. Love's Faithful Promise begins in September 1922 and is a beautiful conclusion. Filled with trials and heartache, we see God's hand leading them closer together and closer to Him. I absolutely fell in love with Deirdre and Matthew...And Phoebe! Matthew carries so much guilt and unforgiveness towards himself that was so hard for me to witness. The compassion I felt for him was overwhelming. We are reminded though that we don't need to walk through the shadows of our past alone. Oh I just love Deirdre and Matthew's journey of love! Keep your fan nearby. Because let me tell you...Their romance is so pure, passionate, precious, and sweet. But don't let my starry eyed, romance gushing fool you, this book gets INTENSE! I was literally sweating with anticipation right around page will know what I mean. Definitely put my stress ball "heart" I got from CFRR to good use (thank you Just Commonly). Will you cry? Maybe. Will you want to smack some sense into people? Probably. Will you fall in love with Irish Meadows and the O'Leary clan? Without a doubt...Yes!!! Make sure you start your journey with the beginning of the series, Irish Meadows. Within these pages I pray you find hope and courage to live out the dreams the Lord has placed in your heart. Love’s Faithful Promise ( Courage Dream - Book 3 ) By: Susan Anne Mason Love’s Faithful Promise is book thee in Courage Dream Series. I have really enjoyed this series , but I believe Love’s Faithful Promise is my favorite . The author drew me in right from the start and did not let go till the end. The characters are so real that you feel like you are right there with them. Mason gives us more than one love in this story , so you feel like you are getting two for one. This third and final book in Susan Anne Mason's 'Courage to Dream' series was the best yet, in my opinion. Set in 1922 Canada and New York, it tells the story of the last O'Leary daughter and son, although his is the secondary in the story. Widower Dr. Matthew Clayborne is devoted to his work and his young daughter. Nothing else is important to him, it seems. Deirdre O'Leary bursts into his office requesting he use his skills to help her mother, who has suffered a stroke. He refuses, but when his daughter suffers yet another health scare, he accepts Deirdre's offer to come to the peace of her family's farm. This will help both his daughter and Deirdre's mother. Matthew is burdened by many things and can't seem to trust God for his future. Deirdre, too, has a problem with trust in one area. Will these two people truly allow God to direct their paths? Sometimes it seems our dreams aren't coming true, when God only has different, better dreams for us. This novel was well written with believable characters all round. I thoroughly enjoyed it. *I was given a copy of this book by the publisher for review purposes. All opinions are my own. (less)
