Love's Illusions by Jolene Cazzola

Chicago, 1971. A marriage broken. A second chance at complicated love.

Jackie Moretti always believed in fairy tale endings, and true love. A promising art student in Chicago in the early 1970s with a happy marriage to her childhood sweetheart points to a bright future, until Jackie's world cracks in two.

Six months into the marriage, it becomes alarmingly clear that Jackie's husband Stephen is not the man she thought she married. Even when confronted with overwhelming evidence, her husband cannot admit the truth and blames Jackie for the destruction of their relationship... trapping her in a forbidden love. She tries to cope with the pain by taking on a new job at a local bar, diving into a series of one-night stands, and numbing herself with drugs.

Sexy, bad boy mechanic Michael Nowak grabs Jackie's attention from their first encounter. The small-time dealer provides both sex and drugs to distract Jackie from her downward spiral. When their feelings turn from lust to something more, Michael gets roped into a larger-scale criminal operation than he ever thought possible. Can their love survive depression, regret, and struggles of the heart or will the second city swallow them whole?

Love's Illusions is the first installment in a series of women's contemporary love story fiction novels. If you enjoy books set in the early 1970s with compelling characters and immersive writing, then you'll love Jolene Cazzola's debut novel.

About the Author

I'm a first time author, but long term creative. After earning my MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I spent most of my career working in social services, while dabbling in the arts on the side. During that time, I found myself in a place where I needed to know something about accounting - before long, one accounting course turned into an MBA and I was headed down a new road.

My life has not been planned. All the roads I've taken have zig-zagged between the creative and the analytical realities that surrounded me. No matter what happened, though, there has always been one constant - without fail, I found myself recreating reality in my mind, or in other words - making things up the way I wish they had been. As people or situations entered or exited from my realm, the stories I ran over and over in my mind became more detailed and real to me. But never once did I give a single thought to putting any of them down on paper. I didn't write; I created with glass, metal, fiber, paper, anything that caught my fancy, except words.

Then one day something changed, a familiar pattern emerged, but this time, words were my medium of choice. Before I knew it, the beginnings of Love's Illusions were forming on my computer. The more I typed - the more I enjoyed it. The pieces of my story were taking form as surely as if they were a piece of sculpture.
I love this incarnation! I hope you will too.

I was given an Advanced Review Copy in return for a honest review. First book in the Love's Illusions series, set in 1970's Chicago, Jackie Moretti is a young woman in a failing, loveless marriage, and her husband Stephen is keeping secrets. Her once normal, wholesome life is turned upside down, and she begins to rely heavily on drugs and alcohol. Meeting Michael Nowak, where she works at a local bar, they begin a relationship that I would consider slightly dysfunctional. Though Michael acted loving and caring, his character still bothered me. I don't want to give anything away, but he was caught up in somethings that I can't agree with, and in a way he was Jackie's enabler too. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I'm not sure if I would read another. Very deep and moving read, that relied on internal dialogue and life issues to set the tone. However, I feel the author focused too heavily on substance use. The flow of the writing was slow, at times taking too long to come to something substantial and worth noting. Good plot and descriptive setting, but just an okay read. - Sarah

The era was the early 1970’s, a time when divorce, homosexuality and abortion were still topics whispered from mouth to ear, eyebrows would raise and religious zealots would pray for the sinners, as well as that their friends wouldn’t learn the taint of the good family name. Follow young Jackie Moretti as she discovers the truth about what happens after the rice is thrown and married life begins in earnest. Jackie was young, trusting and naïve. Long after her husband left, she held that fairytale dream that he would come back, but when she finally realized it would never happen, that maybe she had something better to live for, Jackie began to re-build the shambles her life had become as she began to love herself and carve her own path. Author Jolene Cazzola shares a tale of one young woman, caught between the rosy dreams of being married and the reality of a mate who has been living in denial and hides behind a lie in an effort to maintain his secret. Jackie finds a friendship with benefits in the arms of her recreational drug dealer, only to find that what they have is more honest and secure than even Jackie’s relationship with her dysfunctional family. This is a story of coming of age, of learning to find the inner strength from within and to follow the path YOU need to follow, not the path of least resistance or the path chosen for you by others with their own agenda. Ms. Cazzola shares a strong voice with her readers as she tackles life in an era many of us can still remember. I received this copy from Jolene Cazzola in exchange for my honest review.
