Loving Grace by April Smith Loving Grace brings together all the best elements of a country summer. The cover fits the story so perfectly! It was very interesting to get a glimpse of the many aspects a melon grower’s life, including the various regional and national watermelon associations. I had never thought about these things before. I have now read enough about pageants to now know that they are only partly about appearance. That was brought home so much more in this book than any others that I recall reading. It was so refreshing to not have the story full of catty girls doing everything they can to win. The emphasis was much more on the work involved in being the Watermelon Queen. I hesitate to mention this, but I do not like watermelon. Regardless, I certainly liked reading Loving Grace and highly recommend it for teens and adults alike. How refreshing to read a wholesome, enlightening, and adorable YA book without delving into a sinful and corrupt plot. Loving Grace, by April Smith, deals with credible issues that young people face within Christian morals and upbringings. Grace Summer faces normal teenage challenges, such as passion, romance, and allowing her truth—and the truth God chooses for her—to come to the surface. She reveals her heart and personality through a young, Christian viewpoint, and faces the trials of growing up and finding love, forgiveness, and self. This story has a charming plot, setting, and characters, told in first person present tense, and is strong in dialogue. The pacing grows slightly slower than I prefer, but shares a wonderful message that mothers and daughters alike will enjoy. I will be watching for new work by this author. I received an ARC (a complimentary Advanced Reader’s Copy) of this book from Ambassador International.

Loving Grace is an Young Adult novel that echoes the novels of the 80's and early 90's. Written from a teenager's point of view, we see the ups and downs, the angst, and the indecisions that only come with those teenage years. Although slow and slightly choppy in the beginning, the writing and storyline evened out and flowed extremely well. With Loving Grace the reader is immersed into the world of the Watermelon pageants and watermelon farms, complete with the expectations and responsibilities of each. At times it read as though some points within the story seemed contrived; but, they paled in contrast to the whole story. This isn't a simple romance, but a story of forgiveness, growth, and acceptance. Each chapter brought me a little closer to the truth and what kept Grace from being trusting of Beau. And it is a doozy! The emotional depth portrayed was well written and I felt compassion and empathy for both characters. With all the YA books out there that seem to highlight the immorality of this world, Loving Grace not only places importance on the Christian lifestyle, but it shows that there honor in remaining pure and true to the Christian faith in all things. For conservative readers, there is a point where a certain political figure is mentioned and that might cause some raised eyebrows. This also dated the novel, but it didn't detract from the story so I hope readers will not hold that against the book. I hold this book in high esteem and will gladly recommend it for readers of all ages. How nice to see the beautiful style of true young adult books again!

Amazing romance book for YA readers that brings passion while keeping good family morals and values. A page-turning book with easy flow and fun story line makes this teenage love story fun to read how it unfolds. A romance novel with these kind of values is a RARE find.
