The great seal of the state of North Carolina was first designed in 1893 and has since been modified. As it exists today, it contains a drawing of two female figures in the center of a circle. The state seal of South Carolina, adopted in 1776, is circular. On the left side of the circle is an oval containing a drawing of a palmetto tree (symbolizing the fort on Sullivan's Island built of palmetto logs) rising from a torn-up oak tree trunk (symbolizing the British fleet that was beaten by the men in the fort on June 28, 1776.)
