Overview

Lucent Sylph by RJ Conte

Lucas Thissel has something he fears: an alien species of palm-sized glass fairies called Lucent Sylphs. They came through a portal from a parallel, metaphysical dimension, and they indenture themselves as slaves to human beings. Too much neglect or unkindness, and they will cloud over and disintegrate. Too much love and their hearts are overcome and burst.

And one has attached herself to Lucas.

Lucent Sylph by Rj Conte is a beautiful well written short story about love. The author Conte uses dialogue between characters making this an easy read that keeps you hooked. Something I liked about the story was the relationship between the two characters and how well their personalities coexisted even when it was dangerous for Nissa. I would have wanted Lucas to be a stronger character but it’s understandable that he had to be fragile in order for the story to end the way it did. I also think Conte could have used a bit more detail when describing things but still really liked the story. He uses a lot of imagination to create Nissa’s backstory and explain why she has to live on earth. I noticed he makes it so that this love story can be relatable to anyone yet he makes it feel so unique. I learned that love can be a very powerfully painful emotion to both people and we must as humans learn to love in moderation. Which isn’t always easy especially for girls as Conte mentions. We love deeply. It’s interesting to see how the lack of love can also be damaging in the real world lack of love ends relationships but Conte really emphasizes this in a drastic way in his story which I really enjoyed.

Reviewed by A. L. Peevey for Readers' Favorite Lucent Sylph by RJ Conte is a short story with heart about hearts. A Lucent Sylph is, in the words of the author, “…a translucent glass fairy that can sit in the palm of your hand.” They originate from Sylpha, an otherworldly land inexplicably connected to America by a portal. Although they are much coveted as pets, not only by twenty-fourth century Americans, but the rest of the world as well, Lucas Thissel wants nothing to do with them, for he fears causing them harm and ultimately their death. Yet, what he most fears is love. Then, one day he discovers Nissa, a Lucent Sylph to whom he had been previously introduced, now abandoned by ex-friend and insufferable gaming rival, Josiah. Despite his best efforts to mind his own business, Lucas can’t control his heart nor ignore Nissa’s plight. RJ Conte’s Lucent Sylph is somewhat reminiscent of The Little Prince, each tale making observations about human existence through the words of unearthly beings. Lucent Sylph is about love, but is not a typical love story. On the part of Lucas, there is a certain wistful longing for some romance, “but if a bird loved a fish, where would they live?” The need for love is an obvious theme, as is loss, and that loss can be turned into purpose. God is unabashedly referred to more than once, so are the Lucent Sylphs really angels sent to teach humans more about love? I loved the cover and the story and its message. The writing is fun and poetic at times. I found the language of Lucent Sylph taut yet enchanting. All in all, Lucent Sylph is well worth your time.

RJ Conte's fantasy driven "Lucent Sylph" issues the reader with a new outlook on the portrayal of emotions. The emotional concept is clearly emphasized throughout the story, from beginning to end. Smooth transitioning and fruitful dialogue is what truly brings the story to life and allows the reader to connect and sympathize with its main characters. This creative piece of work lacks nothing more than a true antagonist, however the mythical relationship created amongst the two main characters is what really pushes the story forward. With the constant assurance of attempting to connect with the audience in more than one way, RJ Conte successfully portrayed an intriguing, must-read piece of Fantasy for all to read.

"Together, we can be Love for each other." Wow! I want to take this book and give it to every confirmand I have ever had in 30 years, especially the boys. This is a story about coming of age in a HUGE world, of finding love so expansive it can literally kill you at the time, but you do it anyway. The love between Lucas and Nissa makes you want to find such a thing for yourself. And this tiny story will make even the biggest baddest cynic out there cry their eyes out. If this is an exemplar of R J Conte's work, then bring.it.on! So far, the BEST of 2017. Highly recommended

RJ Conte has done a fantastic job of taking a unique idea and fashioning it into a story that is an enjoyable read. From the first few paragraphs I was hooked and I didn't stop reading until I had reached the end. Lucent Sylph is thought-provoking, artistic, and leaves an impression you won't soon forget. I highly recommend it!
