Overview

Luminous: Living the Presence and Power of Jesus by T. David Beck

When pastor David Beck went to Haiti with a ministry team he found himself deeply experiencing the power of being Christ's own hands and feet. Reflecting on what it means to be Christ to others, he writes: "We come to fulfill Jesus' words that we are the light of the world and are here to let our light shine so others will glorify God (Mt 5:14-16). God intends for his children to be luminous." But how do we get there? Through both personal and spiritual reflection, this book explores the formational practices of those who long to become the embodiment of Christ to the world around them--who long to be what Jesus declared them to be: the light of the world.

I am a relatively new believer. I know people who are strong in their walk, and it seemed like a mystery. Then, I read Luminous. It opened up how I can stay present with the Lord in the middle of day- to -day life. Luminous is filled with real life stories, scripture, practices, and Pastor David's teachings all focused on bringing to our life that "God wants to love his world through you." (Luminous, p121). It answered questions I had like "How do I really pray?" "What is the Holy Spirit?" "What is pride?" "How do I surrender to the Lord?" It is serious at times and just plain fun at others. I found myself laughing at some of the stories like the one with the lady doing her best to be a good Christian at a yoga class where someone's foot kept being stuck in her face. Luminous will be a book that I will refer to again and again in the years to come. It is simple and deep. It is written for all Christians no matter where they are in their walk. What a special blessing this is to read at any age, but I can only imagine the blessing of knowing what it is to live with the Lord for the youngest among us.
