About the Author

Dr. Shainna Ali is a mental health counselor, educator, and advocate who is dedicated to highlighting the important role of mental health in fostering happiness, fulfillment, and overall wellness. She is the author of The Self-Love Workbook, The Self-Love Workbook for Teens, and Luna Finds Love Everywhere, and is the owner of Integrated Counseling Solutions, a counseling and consulting practice in Orlando, Florida. In her practice, she uses a strengths-based approach that empowers clients on their journey of self-love. Within the field of mental health, her areas of expertise include exploring identity and culture, fostering emotional intelligence, healing from trauma, and utilizing creative counseling methods. When she isn’t working, she invests in her self-love by practicing yoga, spending time with her loved ones, teaching dance, or exploring the world.

Dr. Shainna enjoys advocating for the importance of self-love and mental health at workshops and presentations, in the media, and through her Psychology Today–hosted blog, A Modern Mentality. She serves on the board for the Mental Health Association of Central Florida, has been named 30 under 30 by her alma mater, The University of Central Florida, was highlighted as an emerging leader by the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision, and has been honored with the Pete Fischer Humanitarian Award by the Florida Counseling Association.

Catarina Oliveira is an Illustrator from Portugal, based in Toronto, Canada. She graduated as a Graphic Designer in 2005 and embraced Illustration as a full-time freelancer in 2014, specializing in Children’s books since then. A girl sees love all around her in this book about dealing with disappointment and finding gratitude by mental health clinician Ali.

Luna is very excited to go to the park and meet her friends so they can all play with her new rainbow ball. But when she arrives, her pals want to finish playing with a scooter. Before they finish, a thunderstorm sends everyone home. Luna is upset, but with help from her mom—and readers, whom she asks for assistance—she focuses on the love all around her instead of her disappointment and realizes she can share it with others. Ali’s previous works, including The Self-Love Workbook for Teens(2020), are aimed at older audiences, but this distillation of coping skills in picture-book form will work well for preschoolers or kindergarteners. Luna’s style of addressing readers directly will be familiar to young viewers of fourth-wall–breaking cartoon shows, such as Dora the Explorer; the text density and advanced vocabulary (frustrated, supportive) make this most appropriate for shared reading. The calming technique known as “bubble breathing” is particularly well described, although the other family members’ constantly even tempers feel a bit unrealistic. Oliveira’s cheerful, full-color cartoon illustrations, featuring a cast of varying skin tones, rely on shapes more than linework, and their layering gives them a mixed-media feel.
