With his first novel, Mark Andel steps into the imposing shoes of his literary forebears... think Mailer, McInerney... and those literary romeos make for an exquisite fit. Well-drawn characters and an engaging plot line make this book impossible to put down. A closing twist leaves the reader wanting more. Five stars for this one.
I didn't know what I was in for when I picked up this book, which made each chapter a happy discovery. The characterization is spot-on, the narration flows, and the plot is multifaceted, amusing, and engaging. At times, I didn't know if I was reading a comedy, a whodunnit, or literary fiction . . . and since these genres are blended so masterfully here, I didn't really worry about pinning it down. Andel is clear on what's important in life and what's important on the page. My quibbles are few and don't even add up to a missed star: a murky sentence here and a typo there. I also appreciate the idea of naming various chapter titles after lines from sings (at least, I knew what all of the songs were), and I also was perplexed with how that fit in with the book as a whole. Overall, a great book I am happy to recommend!
