Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Subtitled "An Alphabet Picture Book about Maryland," this is a colorful take-off on more traditional ABC books and is suitable for older children. The bright pictures, bordered with representations of Maryland symbols, are quite appealing, and the text is generally intriguing as well as educational. From "A is for Annapolis—the capital of Maryland" to "Y is for you are here"—an opportunity to display a map of the United States showing tiny Maryland in bright pink¾the author does a good job with her letter stories. She ties "X is for xylophone" into "instruments from all over the world can be found at the House of Musical Traditions, a store in Takoma Park" but seems to grasp at straws with "Z is for Zippy and Zoe," her cats that live with her in Silver Spring. She might have chosen the wonderful Baltimore Zoo to end her travelogue. It is unfortunate that she didn't more carefully research the music she drew as part of The Star-Spangled Banner ("K is for Francis Scott Key"), as it is inaccurate and contains a note painted backward, an amateurish mistake in an otherwise charming book. 2000, VSP Books, .
