Mad Mouse (John Ceepak Series #2) by Chris Grabenstein

It's almost Labor Day, and the end of summer could mean the end of someone's life in this exciting sequel to Chris Grabenstein's Tilt-a-Whirl. Young Danny Boyle, the part-time summer cop "down the shore" in Sea Haven, New Jersey, gets taken on a wild ride when he and his longtime beach buddies become the unwitting targets of a mad-man's twisted scheme for revenge. Fortunately, John Ceepak, the cop with a soldier's unshakeable code of honor, stays at Danny's side to help him negotiate the quick twists and turns that threaten to destroy his life, his friends, and everything about the world he loves. Whipping from the boardwalk to the beach and back again, Mad Mouse keeps zigging and zagging at a breakneck pace, all the way to the surprising finish.

I like the people, the story, and the locale-- a New Jersey ocean beach community. The book follows the characters of Tilt-a-Whirl, the first book of the series. Touches of humor in the narrator's descriptions highlight character development. I like the book a lot; it is well worth your time. arf

I don't write many reviews mostly cuz I'm simply not motivated to by what I read. And then a truly unique and intriguing concept is presented and curious but doubtful the author could pull it off I was compelled to give it a try. I did begin at the beginning lol with Tilt A Whirl and loved it so much I grabbed this one the very second I finished the first...long bout 3 a m or so! What is so original is the way the 'real' protagonist's personality is slowly revealed via his cop partner's eyes. I've seen this before, not often but I have, and I found them vaguely dissatisfying and now I see why: the character being revealed never became 'real' for me the way Ceepak has. What a BLAST this series is thus far. Laugh out loud is followed by a sudden intake of breath, yer heart racing, ignoring the late hour and the need to rise early, followed by an exhale with just enough time to inhale just once before yer laughing aloud again. I love the mix of character ages which should appeal to all ages from beach bum mentality to entrenched and consistent morality mentality to the blustery polititions and town leaders with dollar signs for eyes. The author has absolute consistency with his characters too. I can tell who said what by what is said without having to rely on "so so said". This book is the epitome of unadultered joy...not gory but detailed, funny yet serious, realistic yet entertaining. As far as I'm concerned this can be an ENDLESS SERIES. If you buy these books you will have a super good time AND stay out of trouble doing it

Another great book in the Ceepak series.  The author does a great job of building the story and setting the stage making you feel as if you're right there on the boardwalk with them.  As before, you're kept guessing on who the killer is, and with his dry humor and story telling makes for a fun ride.

"Yes you're right." Looks at the ground and picks up her kill and pads with him back to camp.

I’m hooked on this series. The characters that Grabenstein has created are great.. Ceepak and Boyle make a great duo. This is book two and so if you haven’t read book one, there may be a few spoilers in this review, but hopefully not too many. Check out my review of Tilt-a-Whirl for a great introduction. So continuing on with the series, this book is also a quick read. Not much in the style of writing has changed and a few more characters are added. With the story taking place in such a small town, I was worried it would be limited, but that is definitely not the case. With this book, you get to meet new people in town and visit more shops and restaurants. This mystery/crime centers around Danny and his friends which gives us more detail about him and what he does in his time away from work. It will also be decided at the end of this book if Danny gets the full-time position that is available after summer. The mystery itself was amazing. Not what I expected and definitely deeper than the last mystery Ceepak and Boyle solved. I did not guess who or what, until the end of the book. I would definitely recommend this book to those that have read the first book and recommend this series to those who like cozy mysteries. I wouldn’t classify this series specifically as such. It’s definitely not as heavy as Harlan Coben or James Patterson, but just as good. IMO!

OK but not as many laughs or as much mystery as I am accustomed to with this series.
