The series is perfect for a newly proficient reader. With lots of sophisticated vocabulary, it's best kept as a read-aloud for a fledgling reader. . This series does not have to be read in order. Sweet Series Background: The Bed & Biscuit, a veterinary clinic, is run by Grandpa Bender on his farm. The farm shelters all manner of animals, but the leading animals in this series are the indoor animals. The cast of characters is led by mini-pig Ernest along with mynah bird Gabby, the Scottie puppy Sir Walter and Milly the cat. The animals talk to each other and the author has cleverly allowed Gabby, the mynah bird, to communicate with humans through the birds well-chosen repertoire. These books are well-written; they have well-developed story-lines and characters and wonderful vocabulary. This is a truly terrific series for new readers. Sweet Book Summary: Things are going along just swimmingly in Grandpa Bender's farmhouse. The inside animals, Ernest, Gabby, Sir Walter and Milly, love their happy lives lovingly cared for by Grandpa until Grandpa's friend Barnabas, drops of his little chicken, Malicia. Malicia is just what she sounds like: malicious! She's got a bit of magic that she uses exclusively for evil, awful things. The animals band together to try to fight this awful little chicken, but her magic is too powerful. Just when they think all is lost, Ernest figures out a way to alert Grandpa to what is going on. Finally, Grandpa realizes what a menace the little fowl is and he steps in and saves the animals from her treachery. The author has created a suspenseful, very easy to read story that children, especially animal lovers, are sure to enjoy. The pencil drawings scattered throughout add to the breeziness of this story. I love how rich and sophisticated the language is; my six year old's vocabulary expanded exponentially while I read this aloud to him.
