Charles Mulvehill, an American infantry captain wounded at the battle for Cassino during World War II is returned home to recuperate. At a bar in Manhattan he encounters a young couple who introduce him to the screen writer Ben Hecht. He becomes involved in an adventure, working on behalf of an underground organization working to create an independent state of Israel. He is offered an opportunity to sail to the newly formed State of Israel as a correspondent for the Las Vegas News. As the ship tries to unload its cargo of arms and ammunition it is fired upon by troops of the new Israeli army. He is wounded, makes his way ashore and falls in love with an Irgun nurse who treats his wound.
