Overview

"Now that I've met you, would you object to never seeing me again?" This provocative opening line from Aimee Mann's song "Deathly" inspired Paul Thomas Anderson ("Boogie Nights") to write Magnolia, and Aimee Mann's songs, old and new, provided the source material for the relationships and themes of his new film. "Deathly" is here, along with eight other Mann songs -- four are slated for Mann's long-delayed third album, Bachelor No. 2 (although one song is here in instrumental form), and three have turned up elsewhere (on a Harry Nilsson tribute, on the Jerry Maguire soundtrack, and as a UK B-side). (The soundtrack also includes an instrumental theme song from Jon Brion, an R&B ballad from Gabrielle, and two old Supertramp hits.) Aimee Mann's great theme is the insecurity that love brings, with all the complications of trust and distrust that go along with it. "Save me from the ranks of the freaks who believe they can never love anyone," she sings, in her clear and lovely soprano, quickly crystallizing a character. The songs tend toward mid-tempo balladry and favor '60s pop arrangements with sweet strings and horns; Mann claims she had Dionne Warwick in mind, although "Save Me" slyly alludes to the Carpenters and her restrained emotions often echo Dusty Springfield's style. Mann's writing complicated and sophisticated pop songs and that puts her in a league with her sometimes collaborator Elvis Costello, whom she's following into Bacharach territory. The melancholy and bittersweet themes of her songs for Magnolia will cheer up lovers of this type of music.

Paul Thomas Anderson knows how to use music to strengthen his films. The music both complements the film and stands alone at the same time. I loved Aimee Mann's songs - and I'm very unfamiliar with her music - as well as the Supertramp song.

This is one of the best soundtracks, not to mention one of the greatest albums, of the '90s. Aimee Mann has the most intriguing and unique musical sensibilities of any rock star on the market today.

Magnolia is not just a soundtrack, it is an excellent Aimee Mann CD. Despite the addition of some extra songs at the end, this is a solid Mann outing with enough songs that aren't on her upcoming Bachelor No. 2 to justify getting it. Especially good is Mann's rendition of

From the moment I got the Magnolia soundtrack, I listened to it continually. I had to force myself to listen to something esle after a week--but I came back to it. Really great song writing, and I just love her voice. The best songs, in my opinion, are: WISE UP (sob!) and SAVE ME. But MOMENTUM, DEATHLY, DRIVING SIDEWAYS--they are all great!!!

I had the privilege of seeing Aimee Mann and her husband Michael Penn in concert 3/14 at the Park West in Chicago. Not only were they both wonderful, but Mann's voice was so perfectly clear and strong that she puts most other vocalists to shame. She really does deserve more credit than given. The Magnolia soundtrack is perfect for the movie, and great for anyone who enjoys creative and original songwriting and singing. One certainly does not have to see the film to enjoy the CD.
