- Symphony No. 10 in F sharp major (realization by Deryck Cooke): Adagio
Between 2009 and 2014, Markus Stenz and the Gürzenich Orchester Köln recorded the symphonies of Gustav Mahler for Oehms Classics, giving powerful live performances that were captured in vivid multichannel sound. This 2016 box set brings these recordings together on 13 CDs, instead of the hybrid SACDs that were originally released. While this may be a disappointment for audiophiles, the high quality of the recordings makes even the conventional digital format fine for most purposes, not least for their affordability. Stenz and his orchestra recorded the nine completed symphonies and the Adagio from the unfinished "Symphony No. 10," so there are no surprises about the content, except perhaps for the sequence of movements in the "Symphony No. 6," where Stenz follows Mahler's late practice of reversing the Scherzo and Andante moderato. Other than that, these are exceptional performances that are as exciting as they are polished, and the players are in top form, delivering the music with precision, clarity, and expressive depth. Highly recommended.
