It's 1922! And in the mountains of Nevada, one woman rules all...

Maxine Hayes had it all… looks, money and power.

But when tragedy strikes her family, she loses everything!

Though after her years of struggle and hardship she turns from a cold stone to a fine diamond.

Now… she's ready to get on with her life.

In the hopes of finding contentment in a suitable groom…

Maxine becomes a mail-order-bride and heads west.

But what she doesn't plan for is getting thrown back into the world of the rich and powerful, meeting royalty, and actually taking a chance on love.

Carson McCain, son a Scottish Earl, has been waiting to take over his family's Nevada lumber company since the day his father died.

In order to gain control, he must fulfill ONE simple condition for which he never intended…

He must marry.

To Carson, the examples of love in his world are corrupted and he wants no part of an imaginary happily-ever-after.

But a chance encounter with Maxine has the bachelor considering a change of mind... and heart.

Will Maxine accept him for who he is and let love take its course?

Can Carson overcome his struggle with being forced to marry, and accept the love that awaits him if he does so?

Sometimes you have to lose everything in order to gain the one thing that matters.

Well written as all Cynthia Woolf books are. Fell in love with Rita, Jack and "the boys." A good story line and very likeable characters. Looking forward to reading "the boys" stories as I'm sure their tales will follow.

I found the story and chacters on the shallow side, was an ok read.

This story has 93 pages. It was free and better than many free books. I liked the premise but the characters were never fully developed. Perhaps, a longer story would allow for more development. This felt very modern. For example, the heroine "zones out" and the servants are on a first name basis with the employer. This was a bit distracting in a historical novel. It stands alone but feels like it is setting up the series.

A good short read. Editing missed some bloopers.

I have read several of this author's books, but this is the first one I have truly enjoyed reading. I enjoyed the characters and the storyline. I did not like Saul and wished he could have received more for his actions...but Maxine did at least teach him a lesson. Great story.**vrnb**
