Overview

This book Maine-ly Bird Hunting is not an instructional book like Maine-ly Wing Shooting although the reader will find some helpful information about Bird Hunting. This book is thirty-six short stories about some of Brad's more memorable Bird Hunting adventures. Brad has excelled at wing shooting and clay target competition. He has been a field trial gunner for both retriever and pointing dogs. He also owns Varney's Clay Sports, "Home of Have Gun Will Teach Shooting School." He enjoys teaching wing shooting, but bird hunting has and always will be a passion, or more likely an obsession. Brad has had hunting dogs since he was five years old. He has owned Mongrels, Beagles, English Springer Spaniels and German Shorthair Pointers. Along the way he has had one Golden Retriever and one Brittany Spaniel. Brad likes all hunting dogs, but at the present he has a black GSP names Merry-meeting's Captain Moonshine or Mooney. Bird hunting with Mooney is Brad's number one sport. At 75 Brad hunts at least three days a week with Mooney in October, November and December. If you enjoy bird hunting with a few laughs mixed in, this book was written for you. If your bird dog could talk, he would say buy Maine-ly Bird Hunting and read it to me!

About the Author

Brad Varney is the owner and founder of Varney's Clay Sports, the home of "Have Gun Will Teach Shooting School" and he has been hunting and shooting all his life. At 75 years of age, he has won many, many championships and bagged out on hunt after hunt after hunt.

Brad offers a simple and effective solution to become a better shooter.

Brad was born near the great Scarborough marsh of Maine and was one of 10 children. His father was a commercial clam digger and Brad followed in his footsteps but with his natural love for the outdoors, hunting and fishing was what he really wanted to do - first with homemade slingshots and bows and arrows - and eventually with a BB gun that he received for Christmas.

Brad's older brother, Albert, had guns and hound dogs and Brad tagged along whenever possible. At age 15, Brad received his first shotgun, a Stevens Model 94, single barrel 28 gauge, from Albert.

From that point on, Brad's life revolved around guns, hunting and shooting. He also become an avid reader of hunting and shooting literature, especially the "how to" variety. Hunting dogs were and continue to be a very important part of his life.

In 1964 Brad was introduced to skeet shooting and he took to it like a duck to water. He has won numerous competitions at skeet and sporting clays.

Above all else, he is a wing shooter. There are lots of good clay target shooters out there but many of them have never killed a single bird nor spent one day in the field! Brad prides himself on being a wing shooter first and foremost and he has spent a LIFETIME in the field hunting game birds.

Brad has over 45 years of instructing experience and has taught hundreds of shooters to shoot better. His style is easy-going and patient and he walks you through everything you need to do to shoot BETTER.

Brad is one of the few men who have been able to turn a love of shooting moving targets into a successful occupation. His shooting skills are well known throughout the northeastern United States.
